Words of Jesus

And I will pray the Father, and he will give you another Counselor, to be with you forever, even the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him; you know him, for he dwells with you, and will be in you.

John 14:16-17

Whatever, wherever I am, I can never be thrown away. If I am in sickness, my sickness may serve Him. He does nothing in vain. He may prolong my life, He may shorten it, He knows what He is about. He may make my spirits sink, hide the future from me, still He knows what He is about.

— John Henry Cardinal Newman

Abba, Father, Lord God, thank Your continued blessings, the memories from this weekend, the signs to server as answers to my questions, and today's readings that go direct to the heart of the matter which occupies my thoughts as I contemplate to practice in conscious acts Thy will to be done and fight off any doubt hidden in human reason or knowledge to which I already know to be flawed by its own very nature. So lift me up and out of myself and place my feet next to Jesus where in the Holy Spirit I know I can find what I need for today and in doing so server Your will accordingly. For as Peter spoke, "… by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth,… This is the stone which was rejected …, but which has become the head of the corner. And there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved." And as the Psalmist sings, 'Every day I will bless Thee, and praise Thy name…' for Your 'greatness is unsearchable. One generation shall laud Thy works to another, and shall declare Thy mighty acts. Men shall proclaim the might of Thy terrible acts, and I will declare Thy greatness.' In the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, Amen.

Words of Jesus

And immediately all the crowd, when they saw him, were greatly amazed, and ran up to him and greeted him. And he asked them, "What are you discussing with them?" And one of the crowd answered him, "Teacher, I brought my son to you, for he has a dumb spirit; and wherever it seizes him, it dashes him down; and he foams and grinds his teeth and becomes rigid; and I asked your disciples to cast it out, and they were not able." And he answered them, "O faithless generation, how long am I to be with you? How long am I to bear with you? Bring him to me." And they brought the boy to him; and when the spirit saw him, immediately it convulsed the boy, and he fell on the ground and rolled about, foaming at the mouth. And Jesus asked his father, "How long has he had this?" And he said, "From childhood. And it has often cast him into the fire and into the water, to destroy him; but if you can do anything, have pity on us and help us." And Jesus said to him, "If you can! All things are possible to him who believes." Immediately the father of the child cried out and said, "I believe; help my unbelief!" And when Jesus saw that a crowd came running together, he rebuked the unclean spirit, saying to it, "You dumb and deaf spirit, I command you, come out of him, and never enter him again." And after crying out and convulsing him terribly, it came out, and the boy was like a corpse; so that most of them said, "He is dead." But Jesus took him by the hand and lifted him up, and he arose. And when he had entered the house, his disciples asked him privately, "Why could we not cast it out?" And he said to them, "This kind cannot be driven out by anything but prayer."

Mark 9:15-29

Understanding is the reward of faith. Therefore, don't seek to understand so that you may believe, but believe so that you may understand.

— St Augustine

Abba, Father, Lord God, thankful, conscious yet contemplative I come to You today. Thankful for the time I was able to spend with my children and grandchildren this weekend; conscious enough of Your presence so as stay in the moment, able to get out of what happened and not get into what might happen by sharing and communicating with You what I feel as You are at work within me through Your Spirit; contemplative enough to walk by faith filling myself with Your Word and fighting off any doubt which might result in over contemplation and breaking my consciousness in and of the moment and the balance between faith and hope which can only be expressed in and through love, the love that I can only have with You in Jesus through the Spirit.

For what I seek is as is written in today's readings 'Who is wise and understanding..? .. let him show his works in the meekness of wisdom. .. if you have bitter jealousy and selfish ambition in your hearts, do not boast and be false to the truth. This wisdom is not such as comes down from above, but is earthly, unspiritual, devilish. For where jealousy and selfish ambition exist, there will be disorder and every vile practice. ..the wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, open to reason, full of mercy and good fruits, without uncertainty or insincerity. And the harvest of righteousness is sown in peace by those who make peace.' For 'the precepts of the LORD are right, rejoicing the heart; the commandment of the LORD is pure, enlightening the eyes; the fear of the LORD is clean, enduring for ever; the ordinances of the LORD are true, and righteous altogether. More to be desired are they than gold, even much fine gold; sweeter also than honey and drippings of the honeycomb.' In the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, Amen.
