Disciples and Servants

You cannot allow two masters to rule your life. Either you will disregard one and love the other; or else cling to one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and remain enslaved to the gods of this world.

V

Lord God, Abba Father, as a runner at the starting line I listen with eyes focused straight ahead; anticipating Your call asking and praying that I do not false start or react to quickly to my will, my needs, my desires, and do not relax into failing to hear Your call, and know Your will, missing to act according to Your will and purpose for me. This is how I wake, how I walk, and what I pray; for I know all else is as Solomon said vanity. Help Lord God, Abba Father through and in Jesus name in the Holy Spirit that lives within me. In the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, Amen.

V

Be humble in this life that God may raise you up in the next. Be truly moderate and do not punish or condemn anyone immoderately. Be gentle so that you may never oppose justice. Be honorable so that you may never voluntarily bring disgrace upon anyone. Be chaste so that you may avoid all the foulness of lust like the pangs of death.

Hos 14:2-10

Thus says the LORD:

Return, O Israel, to the LORD, your God;

you have collapsed through your guilt.

Take with you words,

and return to the LORD;

Say to him, "Forgive all iniquity,

and receive what is good, that we may render

as offerings the bullocks from our stalls.

Assyria will not save us,

nor shall we have horses to mount;

We shall say no more, ‘Our god,’

to the work of our hands;

for in you the orphan finds compassion."

I will heal their defection, says the LORD,

I will love them freely;

for my wrath is turned away from them.

I will be like the dew for Israel:

he shall blossom like the lily;

He shall strike root like the Lebanon cedar,

and put forth his shoots.

His splendor shall be like the olive tree

and his fragrance like the Lebanon cedar.

Again they shall dwell in his shade

and raise grain;

They shall blossom like the vine,

and his fame shall be like the wine of Lebanon.

Ephraim! What more has he to do with idols?

I have humbled him, but I will prosper him.

"I am like a verdant cypress tree"–

Because of me you bear fruit!

Let him who is wise understand these things;

let him who is prudent know them.

Straight are the paths of the LORD,

in them the just walk,

but sinners stumble in them.

Ps 81:6c-8a, 8bc-9, 10-11ab, 14 and 17

Mk 12:28-34
One of the scribes came to Jesus and asked him,
"Which is the first of all the commandments?"
Jesus replied,
"The first is this:
Hear, O Israel!
The Lord our God is Lord alone!
You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart,
with all your soul,
with all your mind,
and with all your strength.
The second is this:
You shall love your neighbor as yourself.
There is no other commandment greater than these."

The scribe said to him, "Well said, teacher.
You are right in saying,
He is One and there is no other than he.
And to love him with all your heart,
with all your understanding,
with all your strength,
and to love your neighbor as yourself
is worth more than all burnt offerings and sacrifices."
And when Jesus saw that he answered with understanding,
he said to him,
"You are not far from the Kingdom of God."
And no one dared to ask him any more questions.

“We are called to become something other than what we would have been if the call did not exist…are not permitted to remain passive, but are called upon, by these words, to illuminate a world of spiritual and social darkness.” Lee Cantelon, The Words of Jesus of Nazareth

V

Lord God, Abba Father, ‘O that You would bless me and expand my territory! Please be with me in all that I do, and keep from all trouble and from pain!’ Seeing Your blessings in so many ways and in some many things; how does one ask for more, but to do Your will according the that purpose You have for me. In the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, Amen.

V

If my conscience were burdened with all the sins it is possible to commit, I would still go and throw myself into our Lord’s arms, my heart all broken up with contrition. I know what tenderness He has for any prodigal child of His that comes back to Him.

2 Sm 7:4-5a, 12-14a, 16
The Lord spoke to Nathan and said:

"Go, tell my servant David,

‘When your time comes and you rest with your ancestors,

I will raise up your heir after you, sprung from your loins,

and I will make his kingdom firm.

It is he who shall build a house for my name.

And I will make his royal throne firm forever.

I will be a father to him,

and he shall be a son to me.

Your house and your kingdom shall endure forever before me; your throne shall stand firm forever.’"

Ps 89:2-3, 4-5, 27 and 29

Rom 4:13, 16-18, 22

Brothers and sisters:
It was not through the law
that the promise was made to Abraham and his descendants
that he would inherit the world,
but through the righteousness that comes from faith.
For this reason, it depends on faith,

so that it may be a gift,
and the promise may be guaranteed to all his descendants,
not to those who only adhere to the law
but to those who follow the faith of Abraham,
who is the father of all of us, as it is written,
I have made you father of many nations.
He is our father in the sight of God,
in whom he believed, who gives life to the dead
and calls into being what does not exist.
He believed, hoping against hope,
that he would become the father of many nations,
according to what was said, Thus shall your descendants be.
That is why it was credited to him as righteousness.

Mt 1:16, 18-21, 24a
Jacob was the father of Joseph, the husband of Mary.
Of her was born Jesus who is called the Christ.

Now this is how the birth of Jesus Christ came about.
When his mother Mary was betrothed to Joseph,
but before they lived together,
she was found with child through the Holy Spirit.
Joseph her husband, since he was a righteous man,
yet unwilling to expose her to shame,
decided to divorce her quietly.
Such was his intention when, behold,
the angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said,
"Joseph, son of David,
do not be afraid to take Mary your wife into your home.
For it is through the Holy Spirit
that this child has been conceived in her.
She will bear a son and you are to name him Jesus,
because he will save his people from their sins."
When Joseph awoke,
he did as the angel of the Lord had commanded him
and took his wife into his home.

The Words of Jesus of Nazareth by Lee Cantelon

Food for the Soul

It is written: "Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds out from the mouth of God."

I am the bread of life: if you come to me, you will never again hunger spiritually; and if you believe in me, you will never again know spiritual thirst. Rise up! Take hold of the living bread, the spiritual bread that has come down from heaven: if you eat of this bread, you will live forever. The bread that I offer you is my life, which I give for the life of the world. I am the bread of life come down from heaven so that you may feast on spiritual food, and because of this receive spiritual life and not die.

All of your energies are spent in the pursuit of food that perishes; instead, seek spiritual food that will endure forever. This is the food that I long to give you, for God the Father has given me this power.

Since childhood you have heard the story of how your ancestors ate manna in the desert, but that was long ago, and now they are ancient memories. In spite of those miracles, Moses was not able to provide the true bread of heaven, that which my Father is offering to you now. For the bread of God is embodied in the one who is speaking to you, who has come down from heaven, and offered his own life for the world.

If you understood this, you would beg me to give you living water as well; for whoever drinks natural water soon thirsts again, but whoever drinks of the water that I give will discover a well that springs up within, overflowing with eternal life.

Are you thirsting spiritually? Come to me and drink; for they that believe in me, as it has been written, "Out of their innermost being will flow rivers of living water."

Lord God, Abba Father, we are not alone! We only feel alone because we look and count on ourselves. We judge without first judging ourselves. We look for forgiveness and yet do not forgive. We want to be loved but know not how to love. We are alone only when we walk without Jesus in our hearts and on our minds. Help me stay conscious of Your presence Lord, if I get nothing else done today let me spend it with You. In the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, Amen.

V

No one should judge that he has greater perfection because he performs great penances and gives himself in excess …. Merit consists in the virtue of love alone, flavored with the light of true discretion, without which the soul is worth nothing.

Daniel 9:4-10

4  I prayed to the LORD, my God, and confessed, "Ah, Lord, great and awesome God, you who keep your merciful covenant toward those who love you and observe your commandments!  5  We have sinned, been wicked and done evil; we have rebelled and departed from your commandments and your laws.  6  We have not obeyed your servants the prophets, who spoke in your name to our kings, our princes, our fathers, and all the people of the land.  7  Justice, O Lord, is on your side; we are shamefaced even to this day: the men of Judah, the residents of Jerusalem, and all Israel, near and far, in all the countries to which you have scattered them because of their treachery toward you.  8  O LORD, we are shamefaced, like our kings, our princes, and our fathers, for having sinned against you.  9  But yours, O Lord, our God, are compassion and forgiveness! Yet we rebelled against you  10  and paid no heed to your command, O LORD, our God, to live by the law you gave us through your servants the prophets.
Psalm 79:8-9, 11, 13

8  Do not remember against us the iniquities of our forefathers; let thy compassion come speedily to meet us, for we are brought very low.  9  Help us, O God of our salvation, for the glory of thy name; deliver us, and forgive our sins, for thy name’s sake!
Luke 6:36-38

36  Be merciful, even as your Father is merciful.  37  "Judge not, and you will not be judged; condemn not, and you will not be condemned; forgive, and you will be forgiven;  38  give, and it will be given to you; good measure, pressed down, shaken together, running over, will be put into your lap. For the measure you give will be the measure you get back."

Lord God, Abba Father, thankful and humbly I lift up my eyes and ears to You, seeking Your will, always looking, always listening. For the more I feel at home in and with You, I the more I feel lost and out of place under the sun. Help me find and serve Your will and purpose. Guide me, move me, and motivate me to that end. Always preparing, always ready to act immediate, avoiding putting off that which You call me to do. Always conscious enough in the moment to do for others, that which I would want them to do to me. For in those conscious moments with You do I find the oneness to feel, act and do under the sun, that which I feel when with You. In the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, Amen.

Oh how precious time is! Blessed are those who know how to make good use of it. Who can assure us that we will be alive tomorrow? Let us not put off for one moment to another what we "should" do, because the next moment is not yet ours!

Esther C:12, 14-16, 23-25

Queen Esther, seized with mortal anguish, had recourse to the Lord. She lay prostrate upon the ground, together with her handmaids, from morning until evening, and said: "God of Abraham, God of Isaac, and God of Jacob, blessed are you. Help me, who am alone and have no help but you, for I am taking my life in my hand. As a child I used to hear from the books of my forefathers that you, O Lord, always free those who are pleasing to you. Now help me, who am alone and have no one but you, O Lord, my God.  "And now, come to help me, an orphan. Put in my mouth persuasive words in the presence of the lion and turn his heart to hatred for our enemy, so that he and those who are in league with him may perish. Save us from the hand of our enemies; turn our mourning into gladness and our sorrows into wholeness.
Psalm 138:1-3, 7-8

1 I give thee thanks, O LORD, with my whole heart; before the gods I sing thy praise; 2 I bow down toward thy holy temple and give thanks to thy name for thy steadfast love and thy faithfulness; for thou hast exalted above everything thy name and thy word. 3 On the day I called, thou didst answer me, my strength of soul thou didst increase.  7 Though I walk in the midst of trouble, thou dost preserve my life; thou dost stretch out thy hand against the wrath of my enemies, and thy right hand delivers me.  8 The LORD will fulfil his purpose for me; thy steadfast love, O LORD, endures forever. Do not forsake the work of thy hands.
Matthew 7:7-12

7  "Ask, and it will be given you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you.  8  For every one who asks receives, and he who seeks finds, and to him who knocks it will be opened.  9  Or what man of you, if his son asks him for bread, will give him a stone?  10  Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a serpent?  11  If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask him!  12  So whatever you wish that men would do to you, do so to them; for this is the law and the prophets.

Oh generation, who live your lives based on lies: how can you, being without truth, say anything worth hearing? With accuracy you forecast a change in the weather. How is it that you have failed to discern the signs of the times?

The Words of Jesus of Nazareth by Lee Cantelon

This Generation

Whoever is ashamed of me and of my words in these days of sin and non-belief of that person, the Son of Man will be ashamed when he returns in the glory of his Father with the holy angels.

Still non-believing, this obstinate generation clamours for a sign; but no sign will be granted other than the sign that was given to the prophet Jonah. For just as Jonah was in the great deep for three days and nights, so the Son of Man will be three days and nights entombed in the earth.

There will come a day when the inhabitants of Nineveh, called the City of Thieves, will stand and pass judgment on this generation and condemn it. For they repented because of the preaching of Jonah, and now one greater than Jonah stands before you.

The Queen of Sheba will also rise to pass judgment on this generation and condemn it; for she traveled a great distance to hear the Wisdom of Solomon, and behold, one greater than Solomon has come.

How can I describe this generation? They are like children sitting in the market place, calling to their friends: "We have played merrily on our flutes; but you would not dance or sing. We have played a dirge; but you have refused to be sad."

John, the forerunner, came and lived among you in great austerity. Everyone said: "He must be possessed of a demon."

Now the Son of Man has come to you, enjoying life, and you say: "He is a drunkard and a glutton, and the friend of sinners!" With such brilliance, you justify your own inconsistency.

Oh generation, who live your lives based on lies: how can you, being without truth, say anything worth hearing? For out of the abundance of the heart, the mouth speaks.

When it is evening, you say: "It will be fair weather, for the sky is red."

In the morning you say: "It will be foul weather today, for the sky is threatening."

With accuracy you forecast a change in the weather. How is it that you have failed to discern the signs of the times?

Come unto me all who are tired, oppressed, and sick of life, and I will give you wonderful rest! Receive my words and let me teach you, for I am gentle and kind. You will find rest for your souls. That which I ask of you is for your benefit, and that which I demand of you is light.

Those who have chosen to follow me in this generation will one day sit upon thrones and judge kingdoms and kings who have hardened their hearts and turned away from these righteous words.

V

Lord God, Abba Father, thankful, humble and awakened to my human nature, I know the only way I can walk as I was created to by Your grace and mercy is in and with Jesus. My prayer is that You will use me to awaken others. In the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, Amen.

V

Be eager for more frequent gatherings for thanksgiving to God and His glory. For when we meet in this way, the forces of Satan are rendered powerless and his destructive power is cancelled in the concord of your faith.

Jonah 3:1-10

7  And he made proclamation and published through Nin’eveh, "By the decree of the king and his nobles: Let neither man nor beast, herd nor flock, taste anything; let them not feed, or drink water,  8  but let man and beast be covered with sackcloth, and let them cry mightily to God; yea, let every one turn from his evil way and from the violence which is in his hands.  9  Who knows, God may yet repent and turn from his fierce anger, so that we perish not?"  10  When God saw what they did, how they turned from their evil way, God repented of the evil which he had said he would do to them; and he did not do it.
Psalm 51:3-4, 12-13, 18-19

3  For I know my transgressions, and my sin is ever before me.  4  Against thee, thee only, have I sinned, and done that which is evil in thy sight, so that thou art justified in thy sentence and blameless in thy judgment.  12  Restore to me the joy of thy salvation, and uphold me with a willing spirit.  13  Then I will teach transgressors thy ways, and sinners will return to thee.
Luke 11:29-32

29  When the crowds were increasing, he began to say, "This generation is an evil generation; it seeks a sign, but no sign shall be given to it except the sign of Jonah.  30  For as Jonah became a sign to the men of Nin’eveh, so will the Son of man be to this generation.  31  The queen of the South will arise at the judgment with the men of this generation and condemn them; for she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon, and behold, something greater than Solomon is here.  32  The men of Nin’eveh will arise at the judgment with this generation and condemn it; for they repented at the preaching of Jonah, and behold, something greater than Jonah is here.

The Power of Prayer

Until now, you have asked nothing in my name. Ask, and you will receive, and your joy will be full.

The prophet Isaiah has written: "My house shall be called by all nations a house of prayer."

Pray then, to the Father who hears your most intimate prayers and rewards them openly; and whatever you ask the Father in my name, he will provide. If you live your life in me, and let my words live in you, you may ask what you wish and it will be given to you.

Pray in this manner:

“Our Father in heaven, may all the earth recognize that you are the one and holy God.

May your kingdom dwell among us. May your purpose be accomplished on earth, as it is in heaven. Provide us with daily bread to sustain us, and forgive our falling short. Help us to forgive those who have wronged us. Keep us from wandering into faithlessness, and deliver us from the evil one. For to you belongs all power and glory, eternally. Let it be so."

V

Lord God, Abba Father, in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day, our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who have trespassed against us. Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Your is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, now and forever, Amen. In the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, Amen.

V

Would that men might come at last to see that it is quite impossible to reach the thicket of the riches and wisdom of God except by first entering the thicket of much suffering, in such a way that the soul finds there its consolation and desire. The soul that longs for divine wisdom chooses first, and in truth, to enter the thicket of the cross.

— St. John of the Cross

Isaiah 55:10-11

10  "For as the rain and the snow come down from heaven, and return not thither but water the earth, making it bring forth and sprout, giving seed to the sower and bread to the eater,  11  so shall my word be that goes forth from my mouth; it shall not return to me empty, but it shall accomplish that which I purpose, and prosper in the thing for which I sent it.
Psalm 34:4-7, 16-19

4  I sought the LORD, and he answered me, and delivered me from all my fears. 5  Look to him, and be radiant; so your faces shall never be ashamed.  6  This poor man cried, and the LORD heard him, and saved him out of all his troubles.  7  The angel of the LORD encamps around those who fear him, and delivers them.  16  The face of the LORD is against evildoers, to cut off the remembrance of them from the earth.  17 When the righteous cry for help, the LORD hears, and delivers them out of all their troubles.  18  The LORD is near to the brokenhearted, and saves the crushed in spirit.  19  Many are the afflictions of the righteous; but the LORD delivers him out of them all.
Matthew 6:7-15

7  "And in praying do not heap up empty phrases as the Gentiles do; for they think that they will be heard for their many words. 8  Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him. 9  Pray then like this: Our Father who art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. 10  Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done, On earth as it is in heaven. 11  Give us this day our daily bread; 12  And forgive us our debts, As we also have forgiven our debtors;  13  And lead us not into temptation, But deliver us from evil. 14  For if you forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father also will forgive you; 15  but if you do not forgive men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.

Disciples and Servants

You cannot allow two masters to rule your life. Either you will disregard one and love the other; or else cling to one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and remain enslaved to the gods of this world.

Refrain from calling men your spiritual father; for you have only one Father who dwells in heaven. Neither allow anyone to call you learned teacher; for there is only one true teacher, Christ. The person who would be greatest among you must first become your servant; and all who humble themselves shall be exalted.

When the Messiah returns in his glory and all the holy angels are with him, he will sit upon the throne of his heavenly glory. Before him will be gathered all nations and he will separate them, as a shepherd divides the sheep from the goats. The sheep he will set on his right hand, and the goats on his left.

Then the King of Heaven will say to those on his right: "Come, blessed by my Father; enter into the inheritance of the kingdom, prepared for you since the foundation of the world. For I was hungry, and you offered me food. I was thirsty, and you brought me cold water to drink. I was without home, and you invited me in. I was without clothes, and you clothed me. I was ill, and you cared for me. I was in prison, and you visited me."

Then the righteous will answer in amazement: "Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you; or thirsty and give you drink? When did we shelter or clothe you? Did we ever care for you when you were ill, or visit you in prison?"

The King will reply: "Truly, inasmuch as you have done such things for the least of my brothers and sisters, you have done the same for me."

To the ones on his left, the King will say: "Depart from me! For I was hungry, and you gave me no food. I was thirsty, and you offered me nothing to drink. I was without home, and you turned me away. I was naked, and you gave me no clothes. I was sick, yet you didn’t care for me. I was in prison, but you didn’t visit me."

These will protest: "Lord, when did we see you hungry, or thirsty, or homeless, or naked, or sick, or in prison, and fail to comfort you?"

The King will answer: "Truly I say to you, inasmuch as you have failed to do these things for the least of my brothers and sisters, you have failed to do them for me."

Those on the left will be sent away into eternal darkness, but the righteous will be ushered into the kingdom of life.

You call me master and teacher. If I, then, am willing to be your most humble servant, should not you be willing to serve one another as well? I have lived my life as an example before you. Imitate me, and do the same to others as I have done for you.

Lord God, Abba Father, thankful and humbly I pray for all those souls to still do not believe, and for those that believe yet need help with their unbelief. The ways under the sun consume us and will swallow us whole in our pride and selfishness if we do not repent and learn to die to those parts of us that are not rooted in You through Jesus Christ. Liken my heart to Jesus, renew a fresh righteous spirit in me to serve only You. Forgive me for what I have done wrong and failed to do right. Bless me and mine indeed, and provide for us according to Your will and for Your call. In the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, Amen.

It’s true he was a sinner. But don’t pass so final a judgment. Have pity in your heart and don’t forget that he may yet be an Augustine, while you remain just another mediocrity.

Leviticus 19:1-2, 11-18

1  And the LORD said to Moses,  2  "Say to all the congregation of the people of Israel, You shall be holy; for I the LORD your God am holy.  11  "You shall not steal, nor deal falsely, nor lie to one another.  12  And you shall not swear by my name falsely, and so profane the name of your God: I am the LORD.  13  "You shall not oppress your neighbor or rob him. The wages of a hired servant shall not remain with you all night until the morning.  14  You shall not curse the deaf or put a stumbling block before the blind, but you shall fear your God: I am the LORD.  15  "You shall do no injustice in judgment; you shall not be partial to the poor or defer to the great, but in righteousness shall you judge your neighbor.  16  You shall not go up and down as a slanderer among your people, and you shall not stand forth against the life of your neighbor: I am the LORD.  17  "You shall not hate your brother in your heart, but you shall reason with your neighbor, lest you bear sin because of him.  18  You shall not take vengeance or bear any grudge against the sons of your own people, but you shall love your neighbor as yourself: I am the LORD.
Psalm 19:8-10, 15

8  the precepts of the LORD are right, rejoicing the heart; the commandment of the LORD is pure, enlightening the eyes;  9  the fear of the LORD is clean, enduring for ever; the ordinances of the LORD are true, and righteous altogether.  10  More to be desired are they than gold, even much fine gold; sweeter also than honey and drippings of the honeycomb.
Matthew 25:31-46

31  "When the Son of man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, then he will sit on his glorious throne.  32  Before him will be gathered all the nations, and he will separate them one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats,

33  and he will place the sheep at his right hand, but the goats at the left.  34  Then the King will say to those at his right hand, `Come, O blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world;  35  for I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me,  36  I was naked and you clothed me, I was sick and you visited me, I was in prison and you came to me.’  37  Then the righteous will answer him, `Lord, when did we see thee hungry and feed thee, or thirsty and give thee drink?  38  And when did we see thee a stranger and welcome thee, or naked and clothe thee?  39  And when did we see thee sick or in prison and visit thee?’  40  And the King will answer them, `Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these my brethren, you did it to me.’  41  Then he will say to those at his left hand, `Depart from me, you cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels;  42  for I was hungry and you gave me no food, I was thirsty and you gave me no drink,  43  I was a stranger and you did not welcome me, naked and you did not clothe me, sick and in prison and you did not visit me.’  44  Then they also will answer, `Lord, when did we see thee hungry or thirsty or a stranger or naked or sick or in prison, and did not minister to thee?’  45  Then he will answer them, `Truly, I say to you, as you did it not to one of the least of these, you did it not to me.’  46  And they will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous into eternal life."

Audio books I am listening to and other books or readings I am reading:

When Heaven Invades Earth Unabridged By Bill Johnson Narrated by Tim Lundeen – When Heaven Invades Earth is a powerful statement and testimony on the Kingdom of God. Theologically sound, well supported, and extremely well argued, this message provides a carefully constructed biblical foundation for the average Christian to live and walk in the miraculous power of God. Not only is the supernatural possible, it is our commission. The Great Commission that Christ gave the Church challenges us and makes us responsible to rise up to this supreme supernatural calling. Johnson explains how we are called to dominion in the earth through the divine rule of God.
