Reading 1 Ephesians 2:1-10

Brothers and sisters:
You were dead in your transgressions and sins
in which you once lived following the age of this world,
following the ruler of the power of the air,
the spirit that is now at work in the disobedient.
All of us once lived among them in the desires of our flesh,
following the wishes of the flesh and the impulses,
and we were by nature children of wrath, like the rest.
But God, who is rich in mercy,
because of the great love he had for us,
even when we were dead in our transgressions,
brought us to life with Christ (by grace you have been saved),
raised us up with him,
and seated us with him in the heavens in Christ Jesus,
that in the ages to come
he might show the immeasurable riches of his grace

Gospel Luke 12:13-21

Someone in the crowd said to Jesus, “Teacher, tell my brother to share the inheritance with me.” He replied to him, “Friend, who appointed me as your judge and arbitrator?” Then he said to the crowd, “Take care to guard against all greed, for though one may be rich, one’s life does not consist of possessions.”
Then he told them a parable. “There was a rich man whose land produced a bountiful harvest. He asked himself, ‘What shall I do, for I do not have space to store my harvest?’ And he said, ‘This is what I shall do: I shall tear down my barns and build larger ones. There I shall store all my grain and other goods and I shall say to myself, “Now as for you, you have so many good things stored up for many years, rest, eat, drink, be merry!”’ But God said to him, ‘You fool, this night your life will be demanded of you; and the things you have prepared, to whom will they belong?’ Thus will it be for the one who stores up treasure for himself but is not rich in what matters to God.”

Formed: Finding Humility in Our Works

In today’s readings, St. Paul reminds us that we are blessed with grace as a gift from Christ. Our good works are not how we are saved, but rather a fruit of being saved. The Lord works and fashions us in Christ so that we may produce good works. Through this, we are called to a deeper humility and recognition that our good works are from the grace God gives us.

Dear God, my Abba Father, Lord Jesus my Savior, Holy Spirit within me.
Thank You for Your grace and mercy. For You have blessed me indeed beyond measure, and shown me mercy for which I am unworthy. So I count every blessing and humbly walk carrying my cross, and giving all glory and honor to You.

Oh that You will continue to walk with me and mine. Teaching and guiding us. Protecting and blessing us.

Reading 1 Exodus 17:8-13

In those days, Amalek came and waged war against Israel.
Moses, therefore, said to Joshua,
"Pick out certain men,
and tomorrow go out and engage Amalek in battle.
I will be standing on top of the hill
with the staff of God in my hand."
So Joshua did as Moses told him:
he engaged Amalek in battle
after Moses had climbed to the top of the hill with Aaron and Hur.
As long as Moses kept his hands raised up,
Israel had the better of the fight,
but when he let his hands rest,
Amalek had the better of the fight.
Moses’hands, however, grew tired;
so they put a rock in place for him to sit on.
Meanwhile Aaron and Hur supported his hands,
one on one side and one on the other,
so that his hands remained steady till sunset.
And Joshua mowed down Amalek and his people
with the edge of the sword.

‘Render a just decision for me against my adversary.’
For a long time the judge was unwilling, but eventually he thought,
‘While it is true that I neither fear God nor respect any human being,
because this widow keeps bothering me
I shall deliver a just decision for her
lest she finally come and strike me.’"
The Lord said, "Pay attention to what the dishonest judge says.
Will not God then secure the rights of his chosen ones
who call out to him day and night?
Will he be slow to answer them?
I tell you, he will see to it that justice is done for them speedily.
But when the Son of Man comes, will he find faith on earth?"

Formed: Persisting in Prayer

This Sunday’s readings focus on prayer. In the Book of Exodus, Israel succeeded in battle each time Moses kept his hands raised up, and the Gospel speaks of a woman’s pleas being answered through her persistence. These readings emphasize the importance of perseverance in prayer. The Lord hears our prayers and encourages us to persist in praying at each moment. When we give up, we are like Moses lowering his hands during the battle and allowing the enemy to win.

Dear God, my Abba Father, Lord Jesus my Savior, Holy Spirit within me.
Again today You speak to us about the importance of perseverance through prayer. Here I am Lord listening and trying to apply the lessons learned in my everyday walk. And to be an example for mine for their one walk with Jesus.
Thank You for walking with me and mine. Teaching in Your ways and how to grow closer to You. Continue to show us. Guide us. Bless and protect us. Using Your Words and those of the Saints to guide us closer to You.

Today, St. Paul speaks of the incredible plan of grace God has for each of us. It is in Christ and through Christ that we are redeemed and blessed. God has invited us into his plan to be made holy through the shedding of Christ’s blood on the cross. Through the cross, we are adopted by God and our transgressions are forgiven.

By Your grace Lord, we are washed clean. Let us stand firm in our faith, knowing we are not of this world, and thus we will be rejected and hated for what we believe. But we must respond with love, in prayer. Praying for those who hate and seek to harm us. This is never easy, but through one walk with Jesus. He will provide us with what we need.
So I practice Your presence. Knowing You walk with me and mine. Praying You will continue to bless us, and protect us. Asking the You teach and show us Your ways. Giving us the wisdom and courage to respond to those who reject us because of You, as Jesus would.

Formed: Allowing Grace to Guide Us

Are you guided by the flesh or the Spirit? Today, St. Paul challenges us to examine the way we live our lives. We can reflect on this by examining the fruits of our actions. While a life in the flesh leads to sin and brokenness in ourselves and relationships, a life in the Spirit is full of love, joy, and peace. By living life in the Spirit, we discover the wealth of goodness the Holy Spirit has to offer us.

Dear God, my Abba Father, Lord Jesus my Savior, Holy Spirit within me.
Today’s first reading is full of truth and wisdom. Blessed are we when realize his truth and are able to walk by the Spirit. Why do we wait. Forgive me God for ignoring You for as long as I did. Come Holy Spirit! Fill me and mine with Your presence. Make us aware of this truth, and give us what we need to walk in You.
Continue to walk with us. Teaching and giving us what we need for each day. Blessing and protecting us along the way. Guiding us and pulling us back into Your presence when we get disconnected from You.
Not my will, but Yours Lord God.

In today’s Gospel, we are reminded that purity is not something found on the outside, but within. But what can purify our hearts? Jesus answers that we can make our hearts clean through almsgiving. By selflessly loving others with our entire hearts, we can cleanse ourselves of our impurities and atone for our sins.
