The Words of Jesus of Nazareth

On Being Born a Second Time

Do not marvel when I tell you that you must be born anew.

Truly, I tell you: unless you are born anew, you will not see the kingdom of God. Unless you are born of water and the breath of God, you will not enter into the kingdom of God.

That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the breath of God is spirit. The wind blows where it wishes, and we hear the sound that it makes; still we do not know from where it comes, or where it will go. So it is for those who are born anew by the breath of God.

V

Abba, Father, Lord God, I know You are at work within me because I look within first when stumbling, falling or confronting disappointment, loss or conflict; what could I have done different? What did I fail to do? What did I do wrong? And even when I feel right I seek first to be humbled at the foot of the Cross where I can only empty myself and pray that You would help me by likening my heart to Jesus’ and never counting myself above anyone. Dying to myself and leaving the physical being born and raised under the sun behind and rising in spirit with Jesus to soaring above the ways and things under the sun that bind and in slave me to what I have been, to keep me from being what I am. I am a child of You Lord God reborn in the Spirit through Jesus my Lord and Savior, my teacher and counselor, my compass and benchmark for measuring my growth in the Spirit and my reflection and likeness to His image. I must continue to fight what seems logical under the Sun and embrace what seems impossible under the Sun, knowing anything is possible if asked in His name, seeking His heart, image and will first. In the name of the Father, the Son, the Holy Spirit, Amen.

Philippians 3:174:1

18  For many, of whom I have often told you and now tell you even with tears, live as enemies of the cross of Christ.  19  Their end is destruction, their god is the belly, and they glory in their shame, with minds set on earthly things.  20  But our commonwealth is in heaven, and from it we await a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ,  21  who will change our lowly body to be like his glorious body, by the power which enables him even to subject all things to himself.
Psalm 122:1-5
Luke 16:1-8

1  He also said to the disciples, "There was a rich man who had a steward, and charges were brought to him that this man was wasting his goods.  2  And he called him and said to him, `What is this that I hear about you? Turn in the account of your stewardship, for you can no longer be steward.’  3  And the steward said to himself, `What shall I do, since my master is taking the stewardship away from me? I am not strong enough to dig, and I am ashamed to beg.  4  I have decided what to do, so that people may receive me into their houses when I am put out of the stewardship.’  5  So, summoning his master’s debtors one by one, he said to the first, `How much do you owe my master?’  6  He said, `A hundred measures of oil.’ And he said to him, `Take your bill, and sit down quickly and write fifty.’  7  Then he said to another, `And how much do you owe?’ He said, `A hundred measures of wheat.’ He said to him, `Take your bill, and write eighty.’  8  The master commended the dishonest steward for his shrewdness; for the sons of this world are more shrewd in dealing with their own generation than the sons of light.

The Words of Jesus of Nazareth

An Invitation to Life

A wealthy man planned a great banquet, and invited many guests. When the preparations were completed, he sent his servant to gather those who had been invited. "Come,” he said, “for all things are ready."

But all those who had been invited began to make excuses.

The first replied: "I have just purchased a piece of land, and I must go and look at it again. Please have me excused."

The second said: "I have just purchased a herd of cattle, and I must go and examine it. Please have me excused."

A third answered: "I have recently been married, and for this, I cannot attend."

Finally, the servant returned and reported what had happened. Hearing the disappointing news, the master commanded: "Go quickly into the streets of the city, and gather the poor, the lame, the ill, and the blind."

The servant hurried to do this and soon returned, saying: "Sir, I have done as you commanded, and still there is room at the table."

"Go then," the rich man replied, "along the highways and among the fields, and urge those you meet to come in, that my table might be filled. For I say to you: none of those that were originally invited will taste of the banquet that I had prepared for them."

Whoever hears my word and believes in the One who has sent me will find eternal life and not be condemned. Instead, they will pass from death unto life.

V

Abba, Father, Lord God, time, under the sun what else is there that we can give freely no matter what our state, what is more precious. For only You know how long the dash between our physical birth and death will be. Thankful I wake each day and grateful I close my eyes each night, realizing, knowing that by Your grace and mercy I walk and will wake again. In this process I find the essence of humility in realizing, knowing that without You I can do nothing, and as St. Paul writes ‘do nothing from selfishness or conceit, but in humility count others better than myself.’ Thus as read my Lord Jesus’ parable about the wealthy man who planned a great banquet and invited many guest, I see and find myself as those to selfish, to prideful, to occupied by the busyness under the sun to remember to keep You first as a wake, walk and when I close my eyes at night, above all, in faith, hope and love, and with my time. Always listening, always seeking, always asking and praying that I will remember to put and keep You in Jesus with the Spirit first, answering Your invitation with the time I spend seeking and serving You. In the name of the Father, the Son, the Holy Spirit, Amen.

V

If I love Jesus, I ought to resemble Him; If I love Jesus, I ought to love what He loves, what He does, what He prefers to all else: humility. How may we acquire this virtue? Neither logic or reflection will help us any; thinking nice thoughts about it or taking heroic resolutions would lead us to believe we had already acquired it, and we would content ourselves with that. We must examine our actions to see if we not sought our own interest in them. Let us repeat often, "Jesus, so humble of heart, make our hearts like unto thine."

— St. Peter Eymard

Philippians 3:3-8

For we are the true circumcision, who worship God in spirit, and glory in Christ Jesus, and put no confidence in the flesh.  4  Though I myself have reason for confidence in the flesh also. If any other man thinks he has reason for confidence in the flesh, I have more:  5  circumcised on the eighth day, of the people of Israel, of the tribe of Benjamin, a Hebrew born of Hebrews; as to the law a Pharisee,  6  as to zeal a persecutor of the church, as to righteousness under the law blameless.  7  But whatever gain I had, I counted as loss for the sake of Christ.  8  Indeed I count everything as loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For his sake I have suffered the loss of all things, and count them as refuse, in order that I may gain Christ.
Psalm 105:2-7

4  Seek the LORD and his strength, seek his presence continually!
Luke 15:1-10

The Words of Jesus of Nazareth

The Promise of the Spirit

His is the breath of truth. The world does not accept him, because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you will know him, for he will dwell with you, and in you.

When he has come, he will reveal to the world what is sin, and what is righteousness and judgment. Sin, because you do not believe in me; righteousness, because I go to my Father, and you will not see me; judgment, because the oppressive power of the prince of this world has been broken.

V

Abba, Father, Lord God, help me, give me the words to express myself. O Lord God I ask that You bless me indeed, and enlarge my territory, keeping me from evil and from causing pain. And that in all I do, say and think, I do so in Jesus, for Jesus. In the name of the Father, the Son, the Holy Spirit, Amen.

Philippians 2:5-11

5  Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus,  6  who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped,  7  but emptied himself, taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men.  8  And being found in human form he humbled himself and became obedient unto death, even death on a cross.
Psalm 22:26-32
Luke 14:15-24

15  When one of those who sat at table with him heard this, he said to him, "Blessed is he who shall eat bread in the kingdom of God!"

The Words of Jesus of Nazareth

This Generation

Come unto me all who are tired, oppressed, and sick of life, and I will give you wonderful rest! Receive my words and let me teach you, for I am gentle and kind. You will find rest for your souls. That which I ask of you is for your benefit, and that which I demand of you is light.

V

Abba, Father, Lord God, humbled by reality of myself, thankful for the grace and mercy by which I walk; I know how grateful I am and should be even in the shadows of my walk. For around the corner I know not what awaits, but I know I am not alone and I am. I am in Jesus, seeking the right spirit of forgiveness, understanding with love, in faith, by hope with love. In the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, Amen.

V

If only mortals would learn how great it is to possess divine grace, how beautiful, how noble, how precious. How many riches it hides within itself, how many joys and delights! No one would complain about his cross or about troubles that may happen to him, if he would come to know the scales on which they are weighed when they are distributed to men.

Philippians 2:1-4

1  So if there is any encouragement in Christ, any incentive of love, any participation in the Spirit, any affection and sympathy,  2  complete my joy by being of the same mind, having the same love, being in full accord and of one mind.  3  Do nothing from selfishness or conceit, but in humility count others better than yourselves.  4  Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others.
Psalm 131:1-3

O LORD, my heart is not lifted up, my eyes are not raised too high; I do not occupy myself with things too great and too marvelous for me
Luke 14:12-14

12  He said also to the man who had invited him, "When you give a dinner or a banquet, do not invite your friends or your brothers or your kinsmen or rich neighbors, lest they also invite you in return, and you be repaid.  13  But when you give a feast, invite the poor, the maimed, the lame, the blind,  14  and you will be blessed, because they cannot repay you. You will be repaid at the resurrection of the just."

Disciples and Servants

Abba, Father, Lord God, thankful for Your blessings and for the relationship that I have through Jesus with You in the Spirit; my source of source with my every breath, with my every heart beat. Relationships something that I feel void of, defective, out of place, and out of this world; often unable to relate, accept and connect. From my childhood I fail to see that which others see, and worry too much about that. O that You in Jesus would teach me and help me to only focus on You, and what You see as I look in the mirror with the eyes of the Spirit into my heart. ‘I know You’ve cast my/our sin as far as the east is from the west.’ I need You, we need You to Jesus teach me, teach us, O ‘Jesus can You show me/us  just how far the east is from the west.’ Let this day be a new beginning for me, us and for this nation under You Lord God. ‘Create in me/us a clean heart, O God. Renew a right spirit within me/us.’ Reach into the hearts of those that server us as leaders and convict them, as each of us, in the Spirit to overcome ourselves and accept, and chose to keep You first. Let me, let everyone embrace shepherd ship and servitude to our brother and sister in Jesus, as Jesus would lead us. And for the sake of His sorrowful passion have mercy on us and on the whole world. In the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, Amen.

Wisdom 3:1-9

1  But the souls of the righteous are in the hand of God, and no torment will ever touch them.  2  In the eyes of the foolish they seemed to have died, and their departure was thought to be an affliction,  3  and their going from us to be their destruction; but they are at peace.  4  For though in the sight of men they were punished, their hope is full of immortality.  5  Having been disciplined a little, they will receive great good, because God tested them and found them worthy of himself;  6  like gold in the furnace he tried them, and like a sacrificial burnt offering he accepted them.  9  Those who trust in him will understand truth, and the faithful will abide with him in love, because grace and mercy are upon his elect, and he watches over his holy ones.
Psalm 23:1-6

1  The LORD is my shepherd, I shall not want;  2  he makes me lie down in green pastures. He leads me beside still waters;  3  he restores my soul. He leads me in paths of righteousness for his name’s sake.  4  Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I fear no evil; for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff, they comfort me.  5  Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of my enemies; thou anointest my head with oil, my cup overflows.  6  Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life; and I shall dwell in the house of the LORD for ever.
John 6:37-40

37  All that the Father gives me will come to me; and him who comes to me I will not cast out.  38  For I have come down from heaven, not to do my own will, but the will of him who sent me;  39  and this is the will of him who sent me, that I should lose nothing of all that he has given me, but raise it up at the last day.  40  For this is the will of my Father, that every one who sees the Son and believes in him should have eternal life; and I will raise him up at the last day."

I am sending you out as sheep among wolves. Be as wise as serpents, but as harmless as doves.

The Words of Jesus of Nazareth

Disciples and Servants

I am sending you out as sheep among wolves. Be as wise as serpents, but as harmless as doves.

You have seen how the earthly rulers exercise their authority, inconsiderate of the poor. This is not how it is to those in the kingdom of God. Whoever would be great among you must first become your servant. And whoever of you would be the greatest, must first be servant of all. Even so, I have come, not to be served, but to serve, and to give my life as a ransom for many.

If you know these things, happy are you when you do them. Continue in the light of my word. Only then are you truly my disciples.

V

Abba, Father, Lord God, looking back at this day I see Your hand and feel grateful for feeling Your presence which enables me to find humility in each moment fight to overcome my selfness, my pride and my dark side. Feeling the two wolves, looking to Jesus to help me feed to good one, the one that wants to walk in Your light, the one that knows what the evil one cannot accept; that even in darkness I cannot hide from You. I can close my eyes to You, I can close my ears to You, and I can close my heart to You, but I cannot escape nor hide from You. I am in my essence Your child, You are my source of source; a source that is eternal which through Jesus in the Spirit that will and does feed the good wolf. The evil wolf has as its source only the ways and things under the sun; all of which are passing and will not last, dying into the darkness that it seeks. O Lord thank You for this awareness, O Jesus thank You for Your example which lives in Your Words, which together with the Spirit units me as one with my Heaven Lord God and Abba Father in You with the Spirit, and convicts me when I step into the shadows of darkness, and is always there for me to grasp onto and pull me back into the light. In the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, Amen.

V

Eternal God, behold me prostrate before your immense majesty, humbly adoring you. I offer you all my thoughts, words, and actions of this day. I offer them all to be thought, spoken, and done entirely for love of you, for your glory, to fulfill your divine will, to serve you, to praise you, and bless you. I wish and intend to do everything in union with the most pure intentions of Jesus and Mary.

— St. John Leonardi

1 John 3:1-3

1  See what love the Father has given us, that we should be called children of God; and so we are. The reason why the world does not know us is that it did not know him.  2  Beloved, we are God’s children now; it does not yet appear what we shall be, but we know that when he appears we shall be like him, for we shall see him as he is.  3  And every one who thus hopes in him purifies himself as he is pure.
Matthew 5:1-12

1  Seeing the crowds, he went up on the mountain, and when he sat down his disciples came to him.  2  And he opened his mouth and taught them, saying:

3  "Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

4  "Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.

5  "Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth.

6  "Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied.

7  "Blessed are the merciful, for they shall obtain mercy.

8  "Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.

9  "Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God.

10  "Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

11  "Blessed are you when men revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account.

12  Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven, for so men persecuted the prophets who were before you.

The Pontiff in Winter: Triumph and Conflict in the Reign of John Paul II By John Cornwell Narrated by John Lee – Pope John Paul II is one of the most famous and influential political figures of the world. Now, best-selling author and journalist John Cornwell has written an accessible and provocative portrait of this highly charged figure, focusing primarily on the last five years and the major world events, and scandals within the Church that have impacted the papacy. The result is a thoughtful assessment of John Paul II’s legacy to the Church. In an age when many people see the Catholic Church as an institution in crisis, Cornwell raises the level of debate by posing difficult questions; chief among them is the effectiveness of a system that grants lifetime power to an individual vulnerable to the vicissitudes of aging and illness.
