Words of Jesus
"No one can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and mammon. "Therefore I tell you, do not be anxious about your life, what you shall eat or what you shall drink, nor about your body, what you shall put on. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing? Look at the birds of the air: they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they? And which of you by being anxious can add one cubit to his span of life? And why are you anxious about clothing? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow; they neither toil nor spin; yet I tell you, even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. But if God so clothes the grass of the field, which today is alive and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will he not much more clothe you, O men of little faith? Therefore do not be anxious, saying, `What shall we eat?’ or `What shall we drink?’ or `What shall we wear?’ For the Gentiles seek all these things; and your heavenly Father knows that you need them all. But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things shall be yours as well. "Therefore do not be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Let the day’s own trouble be sufficient for the day.
Matthew 6:24-34

It is better to be the child of God than king of the whole world.
— St. Aloysius Gonzaga

Abba, Father, Lord God, O Lord hear my thoughts and prayers; You know my heart; You know my human and spirit nature for You are my source of source; and only You know my intent and how I do try so hard to hold myself accountable to the conviction of the spirit within me according to the teachings of Jesus. I ask Your help in dying to my human self and all of its pride and selfishness, so that I may visibly rise in the spirit with Jesus and Your work in me would be light on the hill to heaven. O that You would bless me indeed, that Your hand would be with me and my love ones always, to keep us from evil and from causing any hurt or pain; and that I may be able to proclaim as did Joshua ‘as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord’. In the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, Amen.

The Shack Mackenzie Allen Philips’ youngest daughter, Missy, has been abducted during a family vacation and evidence that she may have been brutally murdered is found in an abandoned shack deep in the Oregon wilderness. Against his better judgment he arrives at the shack on a wintry afternoon and walks back into his darkest nightmare. What he finds there will change Mack’s world forever. In a world where religion seems to grow increasingly irrelevant "The Shack" wrestles with the timeless question, "Where is God in a world so filled with unspeakable pain?" Words of Jesus
"Beware of practicing your piety before men in order to be seen by them; for then you will have no reward from your Father who is in heaven." Thus, when you give alms, sound no trumpet before you, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may be praised by men. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward. But when you give alms, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, so that your alms may be in secret; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you. "And when you pray, you must not be like the hypocrites; for they love to stand and pray in the synagogues and at the street corners, that they may be seen by men. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward. But when you pray, go into your room and shut the door and pray to your Father who is in secret; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you. "And when you fast, do not look dismal, like the hypocrites, for they disfigure their faces that their fasting may be seen by men. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward. But when you fast, anoint your head and wash your face, that your fasting may not be seen by men but by your Father who is in secret; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you.
Matthew 6: 1 – 6, 16 – 18

Take good care for the aged, for in them you are caring for Christ Himself.
— Bl. Jeanne Jugan

Abba, Father, Lord God, thankful and hungry for Your Word I come before You today; seeking to ‘be strong, and let my heart take courage’ from these Words as I wait on You today. Conscious of Your presence yet over whelmed by thoughts of one beaten down, humbled and stripped to my essence, faced with the reflection of what I have been before man and what I am before You. Trying to stay focused and walk in the moment as I am, Your child, saved by the passion of Christ Jesus, united through Him with You by the Holy Spirit; and not worry about has been or can be, but what is. As it is in these moments with You, which I feel the busyness under the sun tries to separate me from, by robbing me of this time with You. But I will not surrender, I will not be pulled way, for I seek Thy will above all and the Heart of Jesus hidden in the Wisdom of the Holy Spirit, whom I know lives and works out in me through my faith, hope and love. ‘O that You would bless me and my love ones today, enlarger our territory, and that You hand would be with us to keep us from evil, and from causing any pain.’ In the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, Amen.

Words of Jesus – The Beatitudes

Seeing the crowds, he went up on the mountain, and when he sat down his disciples came to him. And he opened his mouth and taught them, saying:

"Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

"Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.

"Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth.

"Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied.

"Blessed are the merciful, for they shall obtain mercy.

"Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.

"Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God.

"Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness' sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

"Blessed are you when men revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account.

Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven, for so men persecuted the prophets who were before you.

Matthew 5: 1 – 12

Stop entertaining those vain fears. Remember it is not feeling which constitutes guilt but the consent to such feelings. Only the free will is capable of good or evil. But when the will sighs under the trial of the tempter and does not will what is presented to it, there is not only no fault but there is virtue.

— St. Pio of Pietrelcina

Abba, Father, Lord God, thankful and aware with an open heart looking for inspiration or conviction in today's readings and from my walk today. Seeking the right words to express my concern while trying to give advice that I follow as much as I give; for I know it is by example I must walk, and the words I say, must be words I live by and follow while always being conscious as St. Pio states when under the trial of the tempter, not to allow my will to do 'what is presented to it.' For what I truly seek in not my will, but Your will Lord God, and who I am to think that my words carry any knowledge or wisdom worth giving to anyone let alone following. Wisdom is hidden in Your Words, and knowledge is obtained only in the wills obedience 'walked' out in the Words of Jesus spoken in the Beatitudes. 'Oh that You would bless me indeed today, enlarge my territory, and keep me from evil and from causing any pain'; keeping a humble spirit hopeful to following when called, and faithful to waiting for the call, but always preparing in and with love doing all things for You. In the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, Amen.

Words of Jesus

And in his teaching he said, "Beware of the scribes, who like to go about in long robes, and to have salutations in the market places and the best seats in the synagogues and the places of honor at feasts, who devour widows' houses and for a pretense make long prayers. They will receive the greater condemnation." And he sat down opposite the treasury, and watched the multitude putting money into the treasury. Many rich people put in large sums. And a poor widow came, and put in two copper coins, which make a penny. And he called his disciples to him, and said to them, "Truly, I say to you, this poor widow has put in more than all those who are contributing to the treasury. For they all contributed out of their abundance; but she out of her poverty has put in everything she had, her whole living."

Mark 12: 38 – 44

Abba, Father, Lord God, aware of all my blessings, conscious of Your presence in all things I give thanks always, even when I feel weakened and humbled by the realization of my failing and corrupt nature. Convicted by the words of St. Paul and empathetic to the song of the Psalmist I do seek to be 'urgent in season and out of season' and find 'unfailing patience in Your teachings', never looking or accepting teachings that 'suit my own likings,' that may cause me to 'turn away from listening to the truth and wander into myths'; but to find in this time with You each day what I need to 'always be steady, endure suffering, and do the work' You call me to do and in fulfilling Your will. That when You call me home, and until then each night when I close my eyes, I might be able to say 'I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.' I pray that 'My mouth be filled always with thy praise and with Thy glory all the day' and that You 'do not cast me off in the time of old age; nor forsake me on days when my strength is spent' for in faith I hope 'continually', and will praise Thee even from the depths of my realization 'more and more' each day. In the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, Amen.

If we knew at what time we were to depart from this world, we would be able to select a season for pleasure and another for repentance. But God, who has promised pardon to every repentant sinner, has not promised us tomorrow….

Words of Jesus

And as Jesus taught in the temple, he said, "How can the scribes say that the Christ is the son of David? David himself, inspired by the Holy Spirit, declared, `The Lord said to my Lord, Sit at my right hand, till I put thy enemies under thy feet.' David himself calls him Lord; so how is he his son?" And the great throng heard him gladly.

Mark 12: 35 – 37

If we knew at what time we were to depart from this world, we would be able to select a season for pleasure and another for repentance. But God, who has promised pardon to every repentant sinner, has not promised us tomorrow…. This very day is a day of truce, a day for conversion. And yet we refuse to cry over the evil we have done! Not only do we not weep for the sins we have committed, we even add to them.

— Pope St. Gregory the Great

Abba, Father, Lord God, I am grateful for this day, aware of all the blessings You have bestowed on me, and I aware that I am not a righteous man nor may I ever become one; humbled by the realization of my nature. But I seek Thee Lord God, I have hope in the promise of Your Words which have inspired men through the ages, as they do me each day. Even when I do not understand, and I question Your meaning and purpose, I hope from the faith that You planted in my heart before I was born into this world under the sun. It is this faith that through Jesus inspires and convicts me. It is this faith which creates hope that helps me feel Your love, and in turn I am able to love in faith with hope that it will be expressed pure and selfless, so that the image of Jesus which I seek maybe scene through my eyes, and in my words and acts. Help me to touch others in this way and with this love today. I feel this need and I am trying fight off worry and anxiousness over what and how and if; so I ask that You to help me to die to myself, so I can rise in and walk with Jesus. In the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, Amen.

2 Timothy 3:10-17<http://www.ewtn.com/vbible/search.asp?abbr=_2Tim&ch=3&bv1=10&ev1=17>

10 Now you have observed my teaching, my conduct, my aim in life, my faith, my patience, my love, my steadfastness, 11 my persecutions, my sufferings, what befell me at Antioch, at Ico'nium, and at Lystra, what persecutions I endured; yet from them all the Lord rescued me. 12 Indeed all who desire to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted, 13 while evil men and impostors will go on from bad to worse, deceivers and deceived. 14 But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have firmly believed, knowing from whom you learned it 15 and how from childhood you have been acquainted with the sacred writings which are able to instruct you for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. 16 All scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, 17 that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.

Psalm 119:157, 160-161, 165-166, 168<http://www.ewtn.com/vbible/search.asp?abbr=Ps&ch=119&bv1=157&ev1=157&bv2=160&ev2=161&bv3=165&ev3=166&bv4=168&ev4=168>

157 Many are my persecutors and my adversaries, but I do not swerve from thy testimonies. 160 The sum of thy word is truth; and every one of thy righteous ordinances endures forever. 161 Princes persecute me without cause, but my heart stands in awe of thy words. 165 Great peace have those who love thy law; nothing can make them stumble. 166 I hope for thy salvation, O LORD, and I do thy commandments. 168 I keep thy precepts and testimonies, for all my ways are before thee.

Words of Jesus

"Which commandment is the first of all?" Jesus answered, "The first is, `Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one; and you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind, and with all your strength.' The second is this, `You shall love your neighbor as yourself.' There is no other commandment greater than these." And the scribe said to him, "… to love him with all the heart, and with all the understanding, and with all the strength, and to love one's neighbor as oneself, is much more than all whole burnt offerings and sacrifices." And when Jesus saw that he answered wisely, he said to him, "You are not far from the kingdom of God."

Mark 12:28-34

In her voyage across the ocean of this world, the Church is like a great ship being pounded by the waves of life's different stresses. Our duty is not to abandons ship but to keep her on her course.

— St. Boniface

Abba, Father, Lord God, thank You, I sit here this morning thinking how to express all that is racing through my mind; trying to practice Your presence in every thought, word and action as well as attitude so that in all things I reflect faith, hope and love following the teaching of Jesus by not worrying or being anxious, and as St. John wrote yesterday in every way and everything 'learn to feel for the ills others suffer', so that I will 'learn to endure the ills they inflict' and in doing so be able to make acceptance and forgive part of every breath I take so as to breath in acceptance by feeling their ills and breathing out forgiveness in and through my faith because of my hope and to show Jesus' love for me. So as I wrestle with myself over how, why and I try to control my anger, pride and selfish nature; feeling all along so poorly and embarrassed for having these feelings let alone expressing them to You; when it hits me.

Thank You for the blessing of faith, hope and love! For while I may fight within and over myself over these ways and things, I have the greatest blessing of all – faith. Faith that is rooted in the belief that is fact to me that You are my Lord God, Jesus is my Lord and Savior, and Your Spirit through Jesus lives in me.

So while I suffer with my own ills, I know I am not a lone because I never feel alone as I once did when I would turn to myself rather than to You. So I know that these things that cause the ills that I suffer with and in, are only real if I let them be real. I know this because I can feel Your presence, and in this feeling I am truly blessed! In the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, Amen.

2 Timothy 2:8-15<http://www.ewtn.com/vbible/search.asp?abbr=_2Tim&ch=2&bv1=8&ev1=15>

10 Therefore I endure everything for the sake of the elect, that they also may obtain salvation in Christ Jesus with its eternal glory. 11 The saying is sure: If we have died with him, we shall also live with him; 12 if we endure, we shall also reign with him; if we deny him, he also will deny us; 13 if we are faithless, he remains faithful — for he cannot deny himself. 14 Remind them of this, and charge them before the Lord to avoid disputing about words, which does no good, but only ruins the hearers. 15 Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a workman who has no need to be ashamed, rightly handling the word of truth.

Psalm 25:4-5, 8-10, 14<http://www.ewtn.com/vbible/search.asp?abbr=Ps&ch=25&bv1=4&ev1=5&bv2=8&ev2=10&bv3=14&ev3=14>

4 Make me to know thy ways, O LORD; teach me thy paths. 5 Lead me in thy truth, and teach me, for thou art the God of my salvation; for thee I wait all the day long. 8 Good and upright is the LORD; therefore he instructs sinners in the way. 9 He leads the humble in what is right, and teaches the humble his way. 10 All the paths of the LORD are steadfast love and faithfulness, for those who keep his covenant and his testimonies.

Words of Jesus

And Sad'ducees came to him, who say that there is no resurrection; and they asked him a question, saying, "Teacher, Moses wrote for us that if a man's brother dies and leaves a wife, but leaves no child, the man must take the wife, and raise up children for his brother. There were seven brothers; the first took a wife, and when he died left no children; and the second took her, and died, leaving no children; and the third likewise;

and the seven left no children. Last of all the woman also died. In the resurrection whose wife will she be? For the seven had her as wife." Jesus said to them, "Is not this why you are wrong, that you know neither the scriptures nor the power of God? For when they rise from the dead, they neither marry nor are given in marriage, but are like angels in heaven. And as for the dead being raised, have you not read in the book of Moses, in the passage about the bush, how God said to him, `I am the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob'? He is not God of the dead, but of the living; you are quite wrong."

Mark 12: 18 – 27

Let us learn to feel for the ills our neighbors suffer, and we will learn to endure the ills they inflict.

— St. John Chrysostom

Abba, Father, Lord God, I am thankful this new day, I am thankful for yesterday, I am thankful for the promise of tomorrow whether here under the sun or in heaven with You. I am thankful for each and every blessing, my faith, health, my wife, my children and their chosen ones, my grandchildren, my mom and dad, my brother and sisters, and all my family, friends and even those who chose to try and hurt, harm or covet me or what I did, do, had or have. I am thankful for the realization of feeling that fuels my faith which gives birth to faith which in You through Jesus I will continue to try and express in love, perfect unconditional love rooted in the feeling of Your presence. I sing with the Psalmist and 'To Thee I lift up my eyes, O Thou who art enthroned in the heavens! Behold, as the eyes of servants look to the hand of their master, as the eyes of a maid to the hand of her mistress, so our 'my' look to 'You' LORD our God,.. have mercy upon 'me'. Through Jesus in the words of St. Paul You 'remind 'me' to rekindle the gifts of You my Lord God that are within 'me',.. for God did not give 'me' a spirit of timidity but a spirit of power and love and self-control. 'I will' not be ashamed then of testifying to You Lord,.. but share in suffering for the gospel in the power of 'You my' God, who saved 'me' and called 'me in the Holy Spirit', not in virtue of 'my' works but in virtue of 'Your' own purpose and the grace which 'You' gave 'me' in Christ Jesus.' So I set out with 'eyes of faith' and hope that I will serve Your purpose and bring honor and praise to all You have given me. In the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, Amen.
