Words of Jesus

And I will pray the Father, and he will give you another Counselor, to be with you forever, even the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him; you know him, for he dwells with you, and will be in you.

John 14:16-17

Whatever, wherever I am, I can never be thrown away. If I am in sickness, my sickness may serve Him. He does nothing in vain. He may prolong my life, He may shorten it, He knows what He is about. He may make my spirits sink, hide the future from me, still He knows what He is about.

— John Henry Cardinal Newman

Abba, Father, Lord God, thank Your continued blessings, the memories from this weekend, the signs to server as answers to my questions, and today's readings that go direct to the heart of the matter which occupies my thoughts as I contemplate to practice in conscious acts Thy will to be done and fight off any doubt hidden in human reason or knowledge to which I already know to be flawed by its own very nature. So lift me up and out of myself and place my feet next to Jesus where in the Holy Spirit I know I can find what I need for today and in doing so server Your will accordingly. For as Peter spoke, "… by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth,… This is the stone which was rejected …, but which has become the head of the corner. And there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved." And as the Psalmist sings, 'Every day I will bless Thee, and praise Thy name…' for Your 'greatness is unsearchable. One generation shall laud Thy works to another, and shall declare Thy mighty acts. Men shall proclaim the might of Thy terrible acts, and I will declare Thy greatness.' In the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, Amen.

Words of Jesus

And immediately all the crowd, when they saw him, were greatly amazed, and ran up to him and greeted him. And he asked them, "What are you discussing with them?" And one of the crowd answered him, "Teacher, I brought my son to you, for he has a dumb spirit; and wherever it seizes him, it dashes him down; and he foams and grinds his teeth and becomes rigid; and I asked your disciples to cast it out, and they were not able." And he answered them, "O faithless generation, how long am I to be with you? How long am I to bear with you? Bring him to me." And they brought the boy to him; and when the spirit saw him, immediately it convulsed the boy, and he fell on the ground and rolled about, foaming at the mouth. And Jesus asked his father, "How long has he had this?" And he said, "From childhood. And it has often cast him into the fire and into the water, to destroy him; but if you can do anything, have pity on us and help us." And Jesus said to him, "If you can! All things are possible to him who believes." Immediately the father of the child cried out and said, "I believe; help my unbelief!" And when Jesus saw that a crowd came running together, he rebuked the unclean spirit, saying to it, "You dumb and deaf spirit, I command you, come out of him, and never enter him again." And after crying out and convulsing him terribly, it came out, and the boy was like a corpse; so that most of them said, "He is dead." But Jesus took him by the hand and lifted him up, and he arose. And when he had entered the house, his disciples asked him privately, "Why could we not cast it out?" And he said to them, "This kind cannot be driven out by anything but prayer."

Mark 9:15-29

Understanding is the reward of faith. Therefore, don't seek to understand so that you may believe, but believe so that you may understand.

— St Augustine

Abba, Father, Lord God, thankful, conscious yet contemplative I come to You today. Thankful for the time I was able to spend with my children and grandchildren this weekend; conscious enough of Your presence so as stay in the moment, able to get out of what happened and not get into what might happen by sharing and communicating with You what I feel as You are at work within me through Your Spirit; contemplative enough to walk by faith filling myself with Your Word and fighting off any doubt which might result in over contemplation and breaking my consciousness in and of the moment and the balance between faith and hope which can only be expressed in and through love, the love that I can only have with You in Jesus through the Spirit.

For what I seek is as is written in today's readings 'Who is wise and understanding..? .. let him show his works in the meekness of wisdom. .. if you have bitter jealousy and selfish ambition in your hearts, do not boast and be false to the truth. This wisdom is not such as comes down from above, but is earthly, unspiritual, devilish. For where jealousy and selfish ambition exist, there will be disorder and every vile practice. ..the wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, open to reason, full of mercy and good fruits, without uncertainty or insincerity. And the harvest of righteousness is sown in peace by those who make peace.' For 'the precepts of the LORD are right, rejoicing the heart; the commandment of the LORD is pure, enlightening the eyes; the fear of the LORD is clean, enduring for ever; the ordinances of the LORD are true, and righteous altogether. More to be desired are they than gold, even much fine gold; sweeter also than honey and drippings of the honeycomb.' In the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, Amen.

Words of Jesus
As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you; abide in my love. If you keep my commandments, you will abide in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s commandments and abide in his love. These things I have spoken to you, that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be full. “This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you. Greater love has no man than this that a man lay down his life for his friends. You are my friends if you do what I command you. No longer do I call you servants, for the servant does not know what his master is doing; but I have called you friends, for all that I have heard from my Father I have made known to you. You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you that you should go and bear fruit and that your fruit should abide; so that whatever you ask the Father in my name, he may give it to you. This I command you, to love one another.
John 15:9-17

Souls eager to arrive at union with God must accept, without excusing themselves, every correction or rebuke, even if not wholly deserved, and even if wholly unjust. It takes great humility to find oneself unjustly condemned and be silent, and to do this is to imitate the Lord, who set us free from all our sins.
— St Teresa of Avila

Abba, Father, Lord God, once again I praise You and feel You presence in todays readings; for once again I feel that through Your Word You are guiding me and laying before me that truth with I seek to create in me the image of Jesus and that which will liken my hearts to His. Lord, You know my heart, You know my every weakness and gift, show me how and give me only what I need to put these truths to work in me, completing that which You, dare I say we, began in August 2002. Raise me out from myself above my flesh and all that I have learned under the sun and place my feet on the solid ground of Your Words so that I may be filled and ready to be used by You to help the poor in spirit and be a light to the needy. In the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, Amen.

"…beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and Herod." Jesus warns us of the corruptive action of ‘leaven’, a symbol of evil disposition; for as ‘a little yeast leavens the whole batch of dough’ sharing such attitude is a ‘rebellious attitude toward Jesus’

Words of Jesus

Now they had forgotten to bring bread; and they had only one loaf with them in the boat. And he cautioned them, saying, "Take heed, beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and the leaven of Herod." And they discussed it with one another, saying, "We have no bread." And being aware of it, Jesus said to them, "Why do you discuss the fact that you have no bread? Do you not yet perceive or understand? Are your hearts hardened? Having eyes do you not see, and having ears do you not hear? And do you not remember? When I broke the five loaves for the five thousand, how many baskets full of broken pieces did you take up?" They said to him, "Twelve." "And the seven for the four thousand, how many baskets full of broken pieces did you take up?" And they said to him, "Seven." And he said to them, "Do you not yet understand?

Mark 8:14-21

When you find your heart growing sad, divert yourself without a moments delay. Take a walk, sing, read something, it matters not what, provided you close that door. Sad thoughts aprise the devil that a favorable moment has come for him to attack us.

— St. Philip Neri

Abba, Father, Lord God, do I seek to renew a grateful spirit, or do I avoid the leaven which Jesus spoke; for as it is written in James 'Every good endowment and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from You the Father of lights with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change. Of Your own will You brought us forth by the Word of truth that we should be a kind of first fruits of Your creatures'. Jesus warns us Mark 8:15 beware of the corruptive action of 'leaven', a symbol of the evil dispositions; for as 'a little yeast leavens the whole batch of dough' Galatians 5:9, sharing such attitude is a 'rebellious attitude toward Jesus' and Your Words of truth which He brought to us and is alive in us through the Holy Spirit. For 'Blessed is the man who endures trial, for when he has stood the test he will receive the crown of life which You Lord God have promised to those who love You. Let no one say when he is tempted, "I am tempted by God"; for You cannot be tempted with evil and You Yourself tempts no one; but each person is tempted when he is lured and enticed by his own desire. Then desire when it has conceived gives birth to sin; and sin when it is full-grown brings forth death' just as a little yeast leavens the whole batch of dough. Help keep me watchful and alert and by avoiding the leaven, keep my grateful spirit. In the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, Amen.

Words of Jesus

The Pharisees came and began to argue with him, seeking from him a sign from heaven, to test him. And he sighed deeply in his spirit, and said, "Why does this generation seek a sign? Truly, I say to you, no sign shall be given to this generation." And he left them, and getting into the boat again he departed to the other side.

Mark 8:11-13

Let us meditate today on the condition of our soul. Are we making a sincere effort to rectify our intentions, to sanctify our daily responsibilities? There are things we fail to remember, not because we have short memories but because we are short of love. The person in love does not forget!

— St Teresa of Avila

Abba, Father, Lord God, thank You for all Your blessings and these Words today that I count and hold most dear of all for they keep me feeling not seeing, feeling not hearing, feeling not reacting, feeling not expecting, feeling not wanting, and are filled with Your truths hidden in the heart of Jesus who stand at the door of our heart knocking. We need only open the door and feel. For in feeling one (I) 'count it all joy', as written in James today 'when you (I) meet various trials, (I) you know that the testing of your (my) faith produces steadfastness. And let steadfastness have its full effect, that you (I) may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing. If any of you (I) lack wisdom, let him (me) ask God, who gives to all men generously and without reproaching, and it will be given him (me). But let him (me) ask in faith, with no doubting, for he who doubts is like a wave of the sea that is driven and tossed by the wind. For that person must not suppose that a double-minded man, unstable in all his ways, will receive anything from the Lord' and the Psalmist proclaims 'Thou art good and doest good; teach me thy statutes. It is good for me that I was afflicted, that I might learn thy statutes. The law of thy mouth is better to me than thousands of gold and silver pieces. I know, O LORD, that thy judgments are right, and that in faithfulness thou hast afflicted me. Let thy steadfast love be ready to comfort me according to thy promise to thy servant.' Let me meditate today on the condition of my soul. And allow me to make a sincere effort to rectify my intentions, to sanctify my daily responsibilities through the feeling the Your presence in all. In the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, Amen.
