Formed: He Rewards Our Efforts

Because of her persistence, the widow in Christ’s parable finally finds justice. We should emulate this posture of persistence in our own spiritual lives. Even when prayer seems dry, stagnant, or boring, let’s remain devoted to spending time with the Lord. He will reward us for our efforts!

Reading I Wisdom 13:1-9

All men were by nature foolish who were in ignorance of God,
and who from the good things seen did not succeed in knowing him who is,
and from studying the works did not discern the artisan;
But either fire, or wind, or the swift air,
or the circuit of the stars, or the mighty water,
or the luminaries of heaven, the governors of the world, they considered gods.
Now if out of joy in their beauty they thought them gods,
let them know how far more excellent is the Lord than these;
for the original source of beauty fashioned them.
Or if they were struck by their might and energy,
let them from these things realize how much more powerful is he who made them.
For from the greatness and the beauty of created things
their original author, by analogy, is seen.
But yet, for these the blame is less;
For they indeed have gone astray perhaps,
though they seek God and wish to find him.
For they search busily among his works,
but are distracted by what they see, because the things seen are fair.
But again, not even these are pardonable.

they were eating and drinking,
marrying and giving in marriage up to the day
that Noah entered the ark,
and the flood came and destroyed them all.

they were eating, drinking, buying,
selling, planting, building;
on the day when Lot left Sodom,
fire and brimstone rained from the sky to destroy them all.
So it will be on the day the Son of Man is revealed.
On that day, someone who is on the housetop

Dear God, my Abba Father, Lord Jesus my Savior, Holy Spirit within me. Today’s Gospel reading strikes to the heart of what matters. Are we prepared for Your judgment. It seems to me that today, to many of us are like the wife of Lot. Even though we have found Christ and accepted Him as our Savior. We keep looking back. Instead of walking with eyes of faith, focused on Jesus, surrounded in Jesus, seeking Jesus with our eyes on Him and Him alone. Help me, mine and theirs Jesus, to have eyes only for You, always on You. Ready for You!

Reading I Wisdom 7:22b–8:1

In Wisdom is a spirit
intelligent, holy, unique,
Manifold, subtle, agile,
clear, unstained, certain,
Not baneful, loving the good, keen,
unhampered, beneficent, kindly,
Firm, secure, tranquil,
all-powerful, all-seeing,
And pervading all spirits,
though they be intelligent, pure and very subtle.
For Wisdom is mobile beyond all motion,
and she penetrates and pervades all things by reason of her purity.
For she is an aura of the might of God
and a pure effusion of the glory of the Almighty;
therefore nought that is sullied enters into her.
For she is the refulgence of eternal light,
the spotless mirror of the power of God,

Dear God, my Abba Father, Lord Jesus my Savior, Holy Spirit within me.
Come Holy Spirit, come. Fill me, mine and theirs with Your Wisdom. We walk in a time where we are bombarded with information and we can get overwhelmed without our even realizing it. Help us to practice Your presence in quiet solitude. For one moment with You is like a thousand elsewhere. Help us to remain in and walk with You, so we may bear fruit.
Thank You for walking with me, mine and theirs. For hearing our prayers. For protecting us from evil and for blessing us as You do.
Not my will, but Yours Lord God.

Hear, O kings, and understand;
learn, you magistrates of the earth’s expanse!
Hearken, you who are in power over the multitude
and lord it over throngs of peoples!

and sovereignty by the Most High,
who shall probe your works and scrutinize your counsels.
Because, though you were ministers of his kingdom, you judged not rightly,

Today we hear from the Book of Wisdom about justice and God calling all to account. In this reading we are reminded that all—no matter how powerful or weak—are under God and will need to answer to him. All things will be made right and we can take comfort that justice is in the Lord’s hands.

Dear God, my Abba Father, Lord Jesus my Savior, Holy Spirit within me.
Today’s action item reminds us to be consoled that You will make all injustice right in the end. But we must still pray without ceasing for the strength and courage to stand up for Your Church and our Country, resisting tyranny while defending those that can’t defend themselves. Give us the discernment for Your truth, guidance to know when and how, and strength and courage to do what needs to be done.

Brothers and sisters:
You are God’s building.
According to the grace of God given to me,
like a wise master builder I laid a foundation,
and another is building upon it.
But each one must be careful how he builds upon it,
for no one can lay a foundation other than the one that is there,
namely, Jesus Christ.
Do you not know that you are the temple of God,
and that the Spirit of God dwells in you?
If anyone destroys God’s temple,
God will destroy that person;
for the temple of God, which you are, is holy.

Gospel John 2:13-22

Since the Passover of the Jews was near,
Jesus went up to Jerusalem.
He found in the temple area those who sold oxen, sheep, and doves,
as well as the money-changers seated there.
He made a whip out of cords
and drove them all out of the temple area, with the sheep and oxen,
and spilled the coins of the money-changers
and overturned their tables,
and to those who sold doves he said,
“Take these out of here,
and stop making my Father’s house a marketplace.”
His disciples recalled the words of Scripture,
Zeal for your house will consume me.
At this the Jews answered and said to him,
“What sign can you show us for doing this?”

The Jews said,
“This temple has been under construction for forty-six years,

Dear God, my Abba Father, Lord Jesus my Savior, Holy Spirit within me.
Thank You for Your Word and all You provide me to nourish my faith and understanding. Thank You for the St. Augustine Institute, Formed and now the Amen App that help me surround myself in Jesus. Feeding my faith with insight and understanding of Your Word. We walk in a time of division where it seems like everything is at odds and divided. Emotions run high and truth is interpreted individually, as the evil one fills the world with lies and hate. But I find rest and peace with You in Your Word, and seek the share what I experience and learn in hopes of blessing someone still searching. Help me spread Your Word. Hear my prayers, deepen my knowledge and understanding. Continue to protect and bless me, mine and theirs.

Reading I Wisdom 1:1-7

For perverse counsels separate a man from God,
and his power, put to the proof, rebukes the foolhardy;

For the holy Spirit of discipline flees deceit
and withdraws from senseless counsels;
and when injustice occurs it is rebuked.
For wisdom is a kindly spirit,
