Reading 1 Ezekiel 37:1-14

The hand of the LORD came upon me, and led me out in the Spirit of the LORD and set me in the center of the plain, which was now filled with bones. He made me walk among the bones in every direction so that I saw how many they were on the surface of the plain. How dry they were! He asked me: Son of man, can these bones come to life? I answered, “Lord GOD, you alone know that.” Then he said to me: Prophesy over these bones, and say to them: Dry bones, hear the word of the LORD! Thus says the Lord GOD to these bones: See! I will bring spirit into you, that you may come to life. I will put sinews upon you, make flesh grow over you, cover you with skin, and put spirit in you so that you may come to life and know that I am the LORD. I prophesied as I had been told, and even as I was prophesying I heard a noise; it was a rattling as the bones came together, bone joining bone. I saw the sinews and the flesh come upon them, and the skin cover them, but there was no spirit in them. Then the LORD said to me: Prophesy to the spirit, prophesy, son of man, and say to the spirit: Thus says the Lord GOD From the four winds come, O spirit, and breathe into these slain that they may come to life. I prophesied as he told me, and the spirit came into them; they came alive and stood upright, a vast army. Then he said to me: Son of man, these bones are the whole house of Israel. They have been saying, “Our bones are dried up, our hope is lost, and we are cut off.” Therefore, prophesy and say to them: Thus says the Lord GOD: O my people, I will open your graves and have you rise from them, and bring you back to the land of Israel. Then you shall know that I am the LORD, when I open your graves and have you rise from them, O my people! I will put my spirit in you that you may live, and I will settle you upon your land; thus you shall know that I am the LORD. I have promised, and I will do it, says the LORD.

Gospel Matthew 22:34-40

When the Pharisees heard that Jesus had silenced the Sadducees, they gathered together, and one of them, a scholar of the law, tested him by asking, “Teacher, which commandment in the law is the greatest?” He said to him, “You shall love the Lord, your God, with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the greatest and the first commandment. The second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. The whole law and the prophets depend on these two commandments.”

Formed: The Resurrection of the Dead

Amidst Israel’s despair, God gives a vision of hope to Ezekiel. In this vision, God reveals that he will bring the dead back to life. This revelation shocked Israel and Ezekiel, impelling them to hope once more. Allow it to do the same for you.

Dear God, my Abba Father, Lord Jesus my Savior, Holy Spirit within me.
Hope, oh the power hidden in hope. Trusting in Your truths. Confident expectation that You will fulfill Your promises. Together with love is my why. Why I believe, why You are so real and present to me. Why I study Your Word and pray without ceasing.
You have shown me You walk with me and mine. I have seen and felt Your hand and presence. I see each blessing. I know You are protecting us. Teaching and guiding us in faith, hope and love.
Not my will, but Yours Lord God.
Jesus, Mary, I love You, save souls.
In Jesus name I pray.

I will prove the holiness of my great name,
profaned among the nations,
in whose midst you have profaned it.
Thus the nations shall know that I am the LORD, says the Lord GOD,
when in their sight I prove my holiness through you.
For I will take you away from among the nations,
gather you from all the foreign lands,
and bring you back to your own land.
I will sprinkle clean water upon you
to cleanse you from all your impurities,

Jesus again in reply spoke to the chief priests and the elders of the people in parables saying,

He dispatched his servants to summon the invited guests to the feast,
but they refused to come.
A second time he sent other servants, saying,
‘Tell those invited: “Behold, I have prepared my banquet,
my calves and fattened cattle are killed,
and everything is ready; come to the feast.”’
Some ignored the invitation and went away,
one to his farm, another to his business.
The rest laid hold of his servants,
mistreated them, and killed them.
The king was enraged and sent his troops,
destroyed those murderers, and burned their city.
Then the king said to his servants, ‘The feast is ready,
but those who were invited were not worthy to come.
Go out, therefore, into the main roads
and invite to the feast whomever you find.’
The servants went out into the streets
and gathered all they found, bad and good alike,
and the hall was filled with guests.
But when the king came in to meet the guests
he saw a man there not dressed in a wedding garment.
He said to him, ‘My friend, how is it
that you came in here without a wedding garment?’
But he was reduced to silence.
Then the king said to his attendants, ‘Bind his hands and feet,
and cast him into the darkness outside,
where there will be wailing and grinding of teeth.’

Formed: Create in Me a Clean Heart

Amidst the prophetic words of Ezekiel is a word of hope. God promises to gather the nations back together after they have been scattered. At the same time, he promises to give his people a new heart. This has been fulfilled through the coming of his Son and the gift of baptism.

The word of the Lord came to me: Son of man, prophesy against the shepherds of Israel, in these words prophesy to them to the shepherds: Thus says the Lord GOD: Woe to the shepherds of Israel who have been pasturing themselves! Should not shepherds, rather, pasture sheep? You have fed off their milk, worn their wool, and slaughtered the fatlings, but the sheep you have not pastured. You did not strengthen the weak nor heal the sick nor bind up the injured. You did not bring back the strayed nor seek the lost, but you lorded it over them harshly and brutally. So they were scattered for the lack of a shepherd, and became food for all the wild beasts. My sheep were scattered and wandered over all the mountains and high hills; my sheep were scattered over the whole earth, with no one to look after them or to search for them.
Therefore, shepherds, hear the word of the LORD: As I live, says the Lord GOD, because my sheep have been given over to pillage, and because my sheep have become food for every wild beast, for lack of a shepherd; because my shepherds did not look after my sheep, but pastured themselves and did not pasture my sheep; because of this, shepherds, hear the word of the LORD: Thus says the Lord GOD: I swear I am coming against these shepherds. I will claim my sheep from them and put a stop to their shepherding my sheep so that they may no longer pasture themselves. I will save my sheep,  that they may no longer be food for their mouths.

Gospel Matthew 20:1-16

Jesus told his disciples this parable: “The Kingdom of heaven is like a landowner who went out at dawn to hire laborers for his vineyard. After agreeing with them for the usual daily wage, he sent them into his vineyard. Going out about nine o’clock, he saw others standing idle in the marketplace, and he said to them, ‘You too go into my vineyard, and I will give you what is just.’ So they went off.  And he went out again around noon, and around three o’clock, and did likewise. Going out about five o’clock, he found others standing around, and said to them, ‘Why do you stand here idle all day?’ They answered, ‘Because no one has hired us.’ He said to them, ‘You too go into my vineyard.’ When it was evening the owner of the vineyard said to his foreman, ‘Summon the laborers and give them their pay, beginning with the last and ending with the first.’ When those who had started about five o’clock came, each received the usual daily wage. So when the first came, they thought that they would receive more, but each of them also got the usual wage. And on receiving it they grumbled against the landowner, saying, ‘These last ones worked only one hour, and you have made them equal to us, who bore the day’s burden and the heat.’ He said to one of them in reply, ‘My friend, I am not cheating you. Did you not agree with me for the usual daily wage? Take what is yours and go. What if I wish to give this last one the same as you? Or am I not free to do as I wish with my own money? Are you envious because I am generous?’ Thus, the last will be first, and the first will be last.”

Formed: Prophecy Fulfilled

The leaders of Israel have failed to be shepherds and serve their flock; they instead have abused their power and influence for their own gain. Yet, from this is born a beautiful promise: God will come to be the true shepherd. Rejoice, for this prophecy has been fulfilled through the Incarnation of Jesus!

I fight to stay connected to You Lord. In the midst of the busyness and chaos of the world and the day to day hustle. For I know in Your presence there is nothing I shall want. There I find peace and rest. There I find what I need to deal and get through whatever is in front of me. There I see that You are walking with me and mine. Blessing and protecting us. Teaching and guiding us.
Not my will, but Yours Lord God.

The word of the LORD came to me: Son of man, say to the prince of Tyre:  Thus says the Lord GOD:
Because you are haughty of heart, you say, “A god am I! I occupy a godly throne in the heart of the sea!”— And yet you are a man, and not a god, however you may think yourself like a god. Oh yes, you are wiser than Daniel, there is no secret that is beyond you. By your wisdom and your intelligence you have made riches for yourself; You have put gold and silver into your treasuries. By your great wisdom applied to your trading you have heaped up your riches; your heart has grown haughty from your riches– therefore thus says the Lord GOD: Because you have thought yourself to have the mind of a god, Therefore I will bring against you foreigners, the most barbarous of nations. They shall draw their swords against your beauteous wisdom, they shall run them through your splendid apparel. They shall thrust you down to the pit, there to die a bloodied corpse, in the heart of the sea. Will you then say, “I am a god!” when you face your murderers? No, you are man, not a god, handed over to those who will slay you. You shall die the death of the uncircumcised at the hands of foreigners, for I have spoken, says the Lord GOD.

Gospel Matthew 19:23-30

Jesus said to his disciples:
“Amen, I say to you, it will be hard for one who is rich
to enter the Kingdom of heaven.
Again I say to you,
it is easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle
than for one who is rich to enter the Kingdom of God.”
When the disciples heard this, they were greatly astonished and said,
“Who then can be saved?”
Jesus looked at them and said,
“For men this is impossible,
but for God all things are possible.”
Then Peter said to him in reply,
“We have given up everything and followed you.
What will there be for us?”
Jesus said to them, “Amen, I say to you
that you who have followed me, in the new age,
when the Son of Man is seated on his throne of glory,
will yourselves sit on twelve thrones,
judging the twelve tribes of Israel.
And everyone who has given up houses or brothers or sisters
or father or mother or children or lands
for the sake of my name will receive a hundred times more,
and will inherit eternal life.
But many who are first will be last, and the last will be first.”

Formed: The Answer Is Humility

Haughty and arrogant of heart, the prince of Tyre considers himself a god. Because of this, God judges him, casting him down to show him that he is not. Pride leads to his downfall. Yet, while pride will cause you to fall, humility will put you in right relationship with God.

God’s temple in heaven was opened, and the ark of his covenant could be seen in the temple.

Mary set out and traveled to the hill country in haste to a town of Judah, where she entered the house of Zechariah and greeted Elizabeth. When Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting, the infant leaped in her womb, and Elizabeth, filled with the Holy Spirit, cried out in a loud voice and said, “Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb. And how does this happen to me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me? For at the moment the sound of your greeting reached my ears, the infant in my womb leaped for joy. Blessed are you who believed that what was spoken to you by the Lord would be fulfilled.”

Mary remained with her about three months and then returned to her home.

Formed: Blessed among Women

With great joy, we celebrate the Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. The perfect disciple, Mary acknowledges that all she has received is a gift from the Lord. Appropriately, she gives thanks for these many blessings. Imitate Mary, giving God the praise and thanks that he is due.

In those days, the princes said to the king:
"Jeremiah ought to be put to death;
he is demoralizing the soldiers who are left in this city,
and all the people, by speaking such things to them;
he is not interested in the welfare of our people,
but in their ruin."
King Zedekiah answered: "He is in your power";
for the king could do nothing with them.
And so they took Jeremiah
and threw him into the cistern of Prince Malchiah,
which was in the quarters of the guard,
letting him down with ropes.
There was no water in the cistern, only mud,
and Jeremiah sank into the mud.

Ebed-melech, a court official,
went there from the palace and said to him:
"My lord king,
these men have been at fault

He will die of famine on the spot,
for there is no more food in the city."

to take three men along with him,

Formed: Truth Divides

Jeremiah does not hesitate in speaking the truth. Because of this, he is thrown into a cistern, prefiguring the mistreatment Jesus will experience. Encouraged by the Holy Spirit, courageously speak the truth, unafraid of the consequences.

Dear God, my Abba Father, Lord Jesus my Savior, Holy Spirit within me.
Lord Your truth does divide… seeking truth is much harder than avoiding it. Jesus is the truth. And just as He tells us, we must take up our cross to follow Him. To many in today’s culture seek the easy way to everything. Expecting to find what only Jesus can give them in everything but Jesus. All we can do is pray without ceasing for their awakening.

You have blessed me beyond measure. For even though I was living sinfully, selfishly and wastefully, You blessed me with each of mine. And while we don’t agree on everything, we agree on You, and Jesus as our Savior and Lord.
Thank You! Humbled I know You walk with me and mine. Guiding and teaching, blessing and protecting us.

I love You! Let us be an example of Your love, and a light that awakens the lost and seeking.
Not our will, but Yours Lord God.
Jesus, Mary, I love You, save souls.

Son of man, what is the meaning of this proverb
that you recite in the land of Israel:

"Fathers have eaten green grapes,
thus their children’s teeth are on edge"?

As I live, says the Lord GOD:
I swear that there shall no longer be anyone among you
who will repeat this proverb in Israel.
For all lives are mine;
the life of the father is like the life of the son, both are mine;
only the one who sins shall die.

If a man is virtuous—if he does what is right and just,
if he does not eat on the mountains,
nor raise his eyes to the idols of the house of Israel;
if he does not defile his neighbor’s wife,
nor have relations with a woman in her menstrual period;

Formed: Judged according to Your Heart

It is not enough to have the right bloodline and family pedigree. God, when he judges, does so based on the actions of the individual. One either rises or falls by his own deeds. Pray today for the grace to be truly righteous, emulating the life and holiness of Jesus Christ.

Dear God, my Abba Father, Lord Jesus my Savior, Holy Spirit within me.
To I feel the power of Your Words, and I see the story of Your redemptive plan in the Bible. I feel at peace in Your presence, loved and forgiven. What a contrast from the guilt, regret, fear and doubt that I have been experiencing these past weeks.
Continue Your work in me. Strengthen my eyes of faith. Rid me of fear and doubt. Create in me a steadfast spirit through the Holy Spirit within me. Focus on Jesus, and my one walk with Him.
Thank You for walking with me and mine. Blessing and protecting us. Teaching and guiding us. Strengthening our love. Give us the courage to deal with what tomorrow may bring, while focused on today. And being who You created is to be.
