Silence and Spiritual Walk: The Silence of Empathy

Then the three of them sat silently with him for an entire week (v. 13). This showed a deep empathy for his physical, mental, and spiritual suffering. It also showed respect—Job should be the one to speak first. Perhaps words seemed powerless in the face of what had happened. Perhaps they were afraid of making things worse by speaking (as did indeed happen). If only they had never opened their mouths at all (see Job 13:1–12)!

A prayer…
Dear Lord God, Abba Father, Jesus my Savior I am lost and don’t know what to do but be there. Give me strength and patience to be there wisely. Let the Holy Spirit guide my words and control my emotions and expressions. Let Jesus fill my heart with His love. Let the healing power of Your grace rain down on us today and bring life to our dreams. Amen

Here I am Lord, practicing Your presence in thought, in word, in prayer and in worship. Trusting You for all things. Readying myself to be a point of light.

A devotion …
Jesus Calling

I AM THE FIRM FOUNDATION on which you can dance and sing and celebrate My Presence. This is My high and holy calling for you; receive it as a precious gift. Glorifying and enjoying Me is a higher priority than maintaining a tidy, structured life. Give up your striving to keep everything under control—an impossible task and a waste of precious energy.

My guidance for each of My children is unique. That’s why listening to Me is so vital for your well-being. Let me prepare you for the day that awaits you and point you in the right direction. I am with you continually, so don’t be intimidated by fear. Though it stalks you, it cannot harm you, as long as you cling to My hand. Keep your eyes on Me, enjoying Peace in My Presence.

Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Your name. Your kingdom come, Your will be done. On earth, as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. Forgive us of our sins, as we forgive those who sin against us. Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Yours is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever.

A thought…
Fathers Day weekend has always been a time of contemplation for me. Thinking about what I didn’t have more than what I did have. And what I wasn’t rather than what I could be. Then in 2002 the way I look at Fathers Day and more importantly ‘fathering’ changed. Unitil then the best role models I had as fathers were my big brother Ralph who I love beyond measure and the Dads especially the single Dads I got to spent time with during baseball, football and cheerleading seasons at the Pasadena park. Two books also inspired this change. The first one was the Purpose Driven Life by Rick Warren. Then second was The Heart of a Father by Ken Canfield founder of the National Center for Fathering. This change can be summed up in two words and one thought. The words ‘One Walk’. The thought ‘I would will be my kids dad until the day the Lord God takes me home; and it’s not just about what I do and say, but how I walk all the time, and where I spend my time. Today’s devotion addresses another key components of this change; God’s conviction, my confession and God’s forgiveness.

Silence and Spiritual Walk: Resisting Conviction

To be under conviction of sin means God is graciously driving us to do what’s right and what’s good for us.

Why, then, would we act like a stubborn mule (vv. 9–10)? Don’t do what I did, David warns. Only an idiot would refuse to confess and repent! The “woes of the wicked” and the unrepentant are self-inflicted, but if we confess and repent, we can trade inner anguish for being immersed in God’s unfailing love (v. 10).

A thought…
In today’s devotion we are told to ‘ask the Lord to help you guard our tongue and avoid the trap of foolishness that masquerades as too many words without wisdom’. For far to long I’ve only thought of this when comes to communicating with others, not so much God. DID I have it wrong! I (we) need to fear the Lord God in a good way, but still fear Him. For He will hold us accountable for what we say and promise Him.

A verse…

Much dreaming and many words are meaningless. Therefore fear God.
Ecclesiastes 5:7

Silence and Spiritual Walking: Many Words are Foolish

Ecclesiastes 5:1-7 NLT
[1] As you enter the house of God, keep You your ears open and your mouth shut. It is evil to make mindless offerings to God. [2] Don’t make rash promises, and don’t be hasty in bringing matters before God. After all, God is in heaven, and you are here on earth. So let your words be few. [3] Too much activity gives you restless dreams; too many words make you a fool. [4] When you make a promise to God, don’t delay in following through, for God takes no pleasure in fools. Keep all the promises you make to him. [5] It is better to say nothing than to make a promise and not keep it. [6] Don’t let your mouth make you sin. And don’t defend yourself by telling the Temple messenger that the promise you made was a mistake. That would make God angry, and he might wipe out everything you have achieved. [7] Talk is cheap, like daydreams and other useless activities. Fear God instead.

To fear the Lord, then, is to avoid the trap of many words and to exercise self-discipline of the tongue (v. 7). The word meaningless connects this point with the main theme of Ecclesiastes. Language is created by God; therefore, words have significance, meaning, and power and should be handled with caution and reverence.

A prayer…
O God, Abba Father, Lord Jesus head my prayer. Let me be quick to forgive and slow to speak before You and those You place before.

A thought…
In endurance sports such as cycling and running, ‘hitting the wall’ is a condition of sudden fatigue and loss of energy, which is caused by the depletion of glycogen stores in the liver and muscles. I believe we can hit the wall spiritually and mentally too. When we try to rely on our own understanding and strength, rather than God’s. You see, I also believe God created us with the need to be in a relationship with Him. It’s a whole in our heart and life that only He can fill. When we try to go it alone we will ‘hit the wall’. Jesus through the Holy Spirit within us is the way. He is our life coach and Savior.

Take my yoke upon you. Let me teach you, because I am humble and gentle at heart, and you will find rest for your souls.

A thought…
Today’s devotion tells us that David wrote Psalm 30 for the dedication of the temple he wasn’t allowed to build. It may also be connected to his census of Israel, followed by God’s discipline (see 2 Samuel 24). Yet he still praised the Lord! We too can praise Him no matter what. Tough circumstances? God is in control. Sin? God forgives. This is the day that the Lord has made!

Elijah had been feeling spiritually empty. He needed to know that God not only acts through impressive miracles but also shows His love in smaller and more personal ways…

…With faith that anticipates God’s answer, David ends this psalm with praise (vv. 11–12). Silence will be transformed into praise, weeping into dancing, and grief into joy! The feeling that our final destiny is the pit of death is a horrible one—but not a true one. Faith knows God will be faithful.

Dear Lord God, Abba Father, Jesus my Savior I just need You. When I feel I can’t go on and don’t know what to do. I turn to You. For in my emptiness, I know You are there. Like the psalmist in today’s reading, I know…
Sing to the LORD, all you godly ones! Praise his holy name. For his anger lasts only a moment, but his favor lasts a lifetime! Weeping may last through the night, but joy comes with the morning. Amen
