My Daily Prayers and Readings for 5/06/2011

< >< My Prayer >< >

So powerful is today’s ‘My Utmost for His Highest’ devotion to those with open hearts and blessed with the ability of recollection; ‘lest we forget just how You dealt with each of us – with patience and with gentleness’.

Abba Father in the name of Christ Jesus who lives within me through the Holy Spirit I pray that You create in me a clean heart, and renew a right spirit within me, for my one walk in and with Jesus today. Asking that You bless me and mine in fulfillment of Your will and keep us from evil and pain; and if we get nothing else done this day, let us spend it loving You and others as You love us. In the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, Amen.

LIBERTY ON THE ABYSS OF THE GOSPEL

“Stand fast therefore in the liberty wherewith Christ hath made us free.” Galatians 5:1

A spiritually minded man will never come to you with the demand – “Believe this and that;” but with the demand that you square your life with the standards of Jesus. We are not asked to believe the Bible, but to believe the One Whom the Bible reveals (cf. John 5:39-40). We are called to present liberty of conscience, not liberty of view. If we are free with the liberty of Christ, others will be brought into that same liberty – the liberty of realizing the dominance of Jesus Christ.

Always keep your life measured by the standards of Jesus. Bow your neck to His yoke alone, and to no other yoke whatever; and be careful to see that you never bind a yoke on others that is not placed by Jesus Christ. It takes God a long time to get us out of the way of thinking that unless everyone sees as we do, they must be wrong. That is never God’s view. There is only one liberty, the liberty of Jesus at work in our conscience enabling us to do what is right.

Don’t get impatient, remember how God dealt with you – with patience and with gentleness; but never water down the truth of God. Let it have its way and never apologize for it. Jesus said, “Go and make disciples,” not “make converts to your opinions.”

< >< Today in the Word Devotion >< >

It will be as you say, so that you may know there is no one like the LORD our God. Exodus 8:10

True submissive belief in God doesn’t come as the result of arguments, protests, or acts of force. Remember as you encounter people of other beliefs (or those who claim to have no beliefs at all) that while they may base their beliefs on their understanding of the facts, belief is ultimately a matter of the heart and will. Someone who refuses to believe your point of view will usually be more receptive to your love and compassion. Instead of plaguing them with verbal attacks, show love.

JUDGMENT ON THE ABYSS OF LOVE

“For the time is come that judgment must begin at the house of God.” 1 Peter 4:17

The Christian worker must never forget that salvation is God’s thought, not man’s; therefore it is an unfathomable abyss. Salvation is the great thought of God, not an experience. Experience is only a gateway by which salvation comes into our conscious life. Never preach the experience; preach the great thought of God behind. When we preach we are not proclaiming how man can be saved from hell and be made moral and pure; we are conveying good news about God.

In the teachings of Jesus Christ the element of judgment is always brought out, it is the sign of God’s love. Never sympathize with a soul who finds it difficult to get to God, God is not to blame. It is not for us to find out the reason why it is difficult, but so to present the truth of God that the Spirit of God will show what is wrong. The great sterling test in preaching is that it brings everyone to judgment. The Spirit of God locates each one to himself.

If Jesus ever gave us a command He could not enable us to fulfil, He would be a liar; and if we make our inability a barrier to obedience, it means we are telling God there is something He has not taken into account. Every element of self-reliance must be slain by the power of God. Complete weakness and dependence will always be the occasion for the Spirit of God to manifest His power.

God has revealed to Pharaoh what he is about to do. Genesis 41:25

In this story, we see God using everything—nations, leaders, trials, even symbols of animals and plants—to fulfill His plan. Like Joseph, be attentive to God’s message wherever He reveals it, and do so with wisdom and humility. God can use the strangest or simplest methods to deliver His message, and He is glorified greatly when His Word is proclaimed and His plans are implemented by those who humbly and obediently submit to His will.

My Daily Prayers and Readings for 5/04/2011

< >< My Prayer >< >

I don’t know if I have learned that much, or if am just aware of Your presence more often, but I do know when things break, go wrong, come up, that were not planned; I take it as a sign to stop and make sure I am connected to and with You, more often than the my old ways and the alternative of getting upset and aggravated, as I fight to overcome and catch up on that which is not even in my control. Under the sun we get so busy and so depend on being busy and the things that help us keep busy that we forget to or even feel guilty to stop being busy and just spend time with You; whether in prayer by just saying the Lord’s Prayer (Our Father) or reading or listening to a devotion or Bible verse, or listening my favorite Christian inspired music. It is not easy to let go of bad habits or of the false feelings of being busy, but stopping is better than the alternative, for in the end all the busyness and the things that we do, all will pass, yet the time spent with You is preparing us for that which will not pass; so where our time is better spent. Thank You for this awareness and lesson learned; at least this today.

VICARIOUS INTERCESSION

“Having therefore, brethren, boldness to enter into the holiest by the blood of Jesus.” Hebrews 10:19

Beware of imagining that intercession means bringing our personal sympathies into the presence of God and demanding that He does what we ask. Our approach to God is due entirely to the vicarious identification of our Lord with sin. We have “boldness to enter into the holiest by the blood of Jesus.”

Spiritual stubbornness is the most effectual hindrance to intercession, because it is based on sympathy with that in ourselves and in others that we do not think needs atoning for. We have the notion that there are certain right and virtuous things in us which do not need to be based on the Atonement, and just in the domain of “stodge” that is produced by this idea we cannot intercede. We do not identify ourselves with God’s interests in others, we get petulant with God; we are always ready with our own ideas, and intercession becomes the glorification of our own natural sympathies. We have to realize that the identification of Jesus with sin means the radical alteration of all our sympathies. Vicarious intercession means that we deliberately substitute God’s interests in others for our natural sympathy with them.

Am I stubborn or substituted? Petted or perfect in my relationship to God? Sulky or spiritual? Determined to have my own way or determined to be identified with Him?

< >< Today in the Word Devotion >< >

The serpent was more crafty than any of the wild animals. Genesis 3:1

So much for the good old days. God’s creation has been misrepresenting His Word and His character since the earliest days of the earth’s existence. One simple lesson to take from this passage urges us to be very careful what we say about God and His Word and carefully scrutinize every such teaching. Erroneous statements about God can come from any source. Guard against it by staying rooted in the Word.

My Daily Prayers and Readings for 5/03/2011

< >< My Prayer >< >

“Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit.” Trust and understanding, come and go, but by faith I keep my eyes fixed on You with knowledge that even though I see it, it may not be as I see it, yet those things I cannot see become more real than that which I see. Then the more I trust in the unseen, the less I need to understand, and the less I understand the more I find myself trusting in the Spirit which I know lives within me.

< >< My Utmost for His Highest >< >

VITAL INTERCESSION

“Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit.” Ephesians 6:18

As we go on in intercession we may find that our obedience to God is going to cost other people more than we thought. The danger then is to begin to intercede in sympathy with those whom God was gradually lifting to a totally different sphere in answer to our prayers. Whenever we step back from identification with God’s interest in others into sympathy with them, the vital connection with God has gone, we have put our sympathy, our consideration for them in the way, and this is a deliberate rebuke to God.

It is impossible to intercede vitally unless we are perfectly sure of God, and the greatest dissipater of our relationship to God is personal sympathy and personal prejudice. Identification is the key to intercession, and whenever we stop being identified with God, it is by sympathy, not by sin. It is not likely that sin will interfere with our relationship to God, but sympathy will, sympathy with ourselves or with others which makes us say – “I will not allow that thing to happen.” Instantly we are out of vital connection with God.

Intercession leaves you neither time nor inclination to pray for your own “sad sweet self.” The thought of yourself is not kept out, because it is not there to keep out; you are completely and entirely identified with God’s interests in other lives.

Discernment is God’s call to intercession, never to fault finding.

< >< Today in the Word Devotion >< >

You are worthy to take the scroll and open its seals, because you were slain. Revelation 5:9

Our relationship with Christ, the Lion and the Lamb, is an eternal paradox. He lowered Himself to lift us up. But in doing so, Jesus has risen, not just from the dead, but to the highest, most glorious position in heaven. While we enjoy a personal relationship with Jesus as a friend and guide, we should also recognize His majesty. Take time today to pray the praises found in verses 11 and 12. Proclaim that He is worthy to receive all praise, honor, glory, and power.

< >< My Prayer >< >

Jesus answered, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God.  That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. Do not marvel that I said to you, `You must be born anew.’ The wind blows where it wills, and you hear the sound of it, but you do not know whence it comes or whither it goes; so it is with everyone who is born of the Spirit.”

Abba Father in the name of Christ Jesus who lives within me through the Holy Spirit I pray that You create in me a clean heart, and renew a right spirit within me, for my one walk in and with Jesus today. THE PASSION OF PATIENCE

“Though it tarry, wait for it.” Habakkuk 2:3

Patience is not indifference; patience conveys the idea of an immensely strong rock withstanding all onslaughts. The vision of God is the source of patience, because it imparts a moral inspiration. Moses endured, not because he had an ideal of right and duty, but because he had a vision of God. He “endured, as seeing Him Who is invisible.” A man with the vision of God is not devoted to a cause or to any particular issue; he is devoted to God Himself. You always know when the vision is of God because of the inspiration that comes with it; things come with largeness and tonic to the life because everything is energized by God. If God gives you a time spiritually, as He gave His Son actually, of temptation in the wilderness, with no word from Himself at all, endure, and the power to endure is there because you see God.

“Though it tarry, wait for it.” The proof that we have the vision is that we are reaching out for more than we have grasped. It is a bad thing to be satisfied spiritually. “What shall I render unto the Lord?” said the Psalmist. “I will take the cup of salvation.” We are apt to look for satisfaction in ourselves – “Now I have got the thing; now I am entirely sanctified; now I can endure.” Instantly we are on the road to ruin. Our reach must exceed our grasp. “Not as though I had already attained, either were already perfect.” If we have only what we have experienced, we have nothing; if we have the inspiration of the vision of God, we have more than we can experience. Beware of the danger of relaxation spiritually.

< >< Today in the Word Devotion >< >

I saw the Spirit come down from heaven as a dove and remain on him. John 1:32

The dove may stand as a symbol of peace, but it is also a strong bird with incredible endurance and precise direction—again, it’s an apt portrait of the Holy Spirit. Depending on the Spirit is no sign of weakness! Today’s passage shows the Son of God being ministered to by a man, showing obedience to the Father, and receiving assistance from the Spirit. We should never feel too proud to yield to the Spirit’s guidance or accept help from others.

INSIGHT NOT EMOTION

“I have to lead my life in faith, without seeing Him.” 2 Corinthians 5:7 (MOFFATT)

For a time we are conscious of God’s attentions, then, when God begins to use us in His enterprises, we take on a pathetic look and talk of the trials and the difficulties, and all the time God is trying to make us do our duty as obscure people. None of us would be obscure spiritually if we could help it. Can we do our duty when God has shut up heaven? Some of us always want to be illuminated saints with golden haloes and the flush of inspiration, and to have the saints of God dealing with us all the time. A gilt-edged saint is no good, he is abnormal, unfit for daily life, and altogether unlike God. We are here as men and women, not as half-fledged angels, to do the work of the world, and to do it with an infinitely greater power to stand the turmoil because we have been born from above.

If we try to re-introduce the rare moments of inspiration, it is a sign that it is not God we want. We are making a fetish of the moments when God did come and speak, and insisting that He must do it again; whereas what God wants us to do is to “walk by faith.” How many of us have laid ourselves by, as it were, and said – “I cannot do any more until God appears to me.” He never will, and without any inspiration, without any sudden touch of God, we will have to get up. Then comes the surprise – “Why, He was there all the time, and I never knew it!” Never live for the rare moments, they are surprises. God will give us touches of inspiration when He sees we are not in danger of being led away by them. We must never make our moments of inspiration our standard; our standard is our duty.

In that day, the Lord will punish with his sword . . . Leviathan the coiling serpent. Isaiah 27:1

For the rest of the month, we’ll focus on animals with which we are much more familiar, but today is a necessary reminder of how far beyond our understanding the character of God extends. He relates to us as a friend, but we should be careful about questioning His ways. We simply cannot comprehend His rule over us. Do you believe that enough to trust Him when life doesn’t seem to make sense? Be still, and know that He is God (Ps. 46:10).

My Daily Prayers and Readings for 4/30/2011

< >< My Prayer >< >

Let me look back and feel and see the spontaneity of my love for You in the Trinity through Christ Jesus in the Holy Spirit, in my walk, my one walk with and in Jesus through the Holy Spirit!

< >< My Utmost for His Highest >< >

THE SPONTANEITY OF LOVE

“Love suffereth long, and is kind . . .” 1 Corinthians 13:4-8

Love is not premeditated, it is spontaneous, i.e., it bursts up in extraordinary ways. There is nothing of mathematical certainty in Paul’s category of love. We cannot say – “Now I am going to think no evil; I am going to believe all things.” The characteristic of love is spontaneity. We do not set the statements of Jesus in front of us as a standard; but when His Spirit is having His way with us, we live according to His standard without knowing it, and on looking back we are amazed at the disinterestedness of a particular emotion, which is the evidence that the spontaneity of real love was there. In everything to do with the life of God in us, its nature is only discerned when it is past.

The springs of love are in God, not in us. It is absurd to look for the love of God in our hearts naturally, it is only there when it has been shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Spirit.

If we try to prove to God how much we love Him, it is a sure sign that we do not love Him. The evidence of our love for Him is the absolute spontaneity of our love, it comes naturally. In looking back we cannot tell why we did certain things, we did them according to the spontaneous nature of His love in us. The life of God manifests itself in this spontaneous way because the springs of love are in the Holy Ghost. (Romans 5:5.)

< >< Today in the Word Devotion >< >

Repentance and forgiveness of sins will be preached in his name to all nations. Luke 24:47

Studying the life of Christ is a powerful experience. It might be worth taking some time to reflect on this month’s devotional study of Luke. What have you learned about God from it? What was your favorite passage or episode? What sorts of things has the Lord been impressing on your heart and mind during this study? What issues or events would you like to explore in more depth? What changes do you need to make in your thoughts, words, and actions as a result of this study?
