The Words of Jesus of Nazareth by Lee Cantelon

Food for the Soul

It is written: "Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds out from the mouth of God."

I am the bread of life: if you come to me, you will never again hunger spiritually; and if you believe in me, you will never again know spiritual thirst. Rise up! Take hold of the living bread, the spiritual bread that has come down from heaven: if you eat of this bread, you will live forever. The bread that I offer you is my life, which I give for the life of the world. I am the bread of life come down from heaven so that you may feast on spiritual food, and because of this receive spiritual life and not die.

All of your energies are spent in the pursuit of food that perishes; instead, seek spiritual food that will endure forever. This is the food that I long to give you, for God the Father has given me this power.

Since childhood you have heard the story of how your ancestors ate manna in the desert, but that was long ago, and now they are ancient memories. In spite of those miracles, Moses was not able to provide the true bread of heaven, that which my Father is offering to you now. For the bread of God is embodied in the one who is speaking to you, who has come down from heaven, and offered his own life for the world.

If you understood this, you would beg me to give you living water as well; for whoever drinks natural water soon thirsts again, but whoever drinks of the water that I give will discover a well that springs up within, overflowing with eternal life.

Are you thirsting spiritually? Come to me and drink; for they that believe in me, as it has been written, "Out of their innermost being will flow rivers of living water."

V

Abba, Father, Lord God, thankful, humble and reflective of the innocence of childhood. Oh how easily it is to feel Jesus, to talk about Jesus, to love Jesus, to believe in Jesus without questioning what we are told and taught. As we get older we still enjoy and want to the children we love know about, love and believe in Jesus, even as we begin to drift away, leaving the tasks of telling and teaching our children about Jesus, or worse our religion, to others; when it is our faith that we should be talking about and teaching, but since like Adam and Eve with knowledge of the world we become aware and we react to our human condition by trying to hide from You, stop wanting to learn about, grow with or even consider the sacrifice of following Jesus, so we tune out the Spirit which is a live within us and walk more and more subconsciously and spend less and less time alone with You in conscious reflection, meditation and prayer. Until we are awakened and the Words of Jesus grasp us by the heart and we know the truth of His Words that we can ‘not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds out from the mouth of God’ and that our human condition is passing as we are in physical form mortal, but as spiritual beings we are eternal and the spirit thirst so we need to start at the feet of Jesus on the Cross and drink; living for and believing in Him, for has He tells us  it has been written, ‘Out of their innermost being will flow rivers of living water.’ I believe and feel this now this moment, help me keep and walk in this moment, this feeling! In the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, Amen.

Invisible in His own nature, He became visible in ours. Beyond our grasp, He chose to come within our grasp. Existing before all time began, He began to exist in a moment in time. Incapable of suffering as God, He did not refuse to be man, capable of suffering. Immortal, He chose to be subject to the laws of death.

1 John 2:12-17

12  I am writing to you, little children, because your sins are forgiven for his sake.  13  I am writing to you, fathers, because you know him who is from the beginning. I am writing to you, young men, because you have overcome the evil one. I write to you, children, because you know the Father.  14  I write to you, fathers, because you know him who is from the beginning. I write to you, young men, because you are strong, and the word of God abides in you, and you have overcome the evil one.  15  Do not love the world or the things in the world. If any one loves the world, love for the Father is not in him.  16  For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh and the lust of the eyes and the pride of life, is not of the Father but is of the world.  17  And the world passes away, and the lust of it; but he who does the will of God abides for ever.
Psalm 96:7-10
Luke 2:36-40

A Place for You

I go to prepare a place for you.

Know this: if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and take you to be there with me; so that where I am, there you may be also. Let not your heart be troubled: you believe in God; believe also in me. In my Father’s house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I must go away, but I will come again to you. If you truly loved me you would rejoice, because I return to the Father.

Do not marvel when I say: for little while, you will not see me; but not long after that, you will see me again. You will weep and be sad, but the world will rejoice. You will be sorrowful, but your sorrow will be turned to joy.

A woman, when she is in childbirth, knows pain and agony; but as soon as the child is delivered she forgets her suffering, rejoicing that her child is born into the world. For a moment you may experience sorrow; but I will see you again, and your heart will rejoice, and no one will be able to take your joy from you.

V

Abba, Father, Lord God, thankful even if I am ill tempered and much too often do not walk with gratitude as my attitude, because I am aware of Your blessings each and every one of them, and should. Humbled because of the awareness of Your presence and reality of what I have allowed to become my nature, and my awaken spirit that brings me back to the feet of Jesus on the Cross, His passion, His love, His example. O I have, do I spend too much time focusing within myself, hoping for change; rather than finding and focusing on something outside myself to work on and work out. O that You would bless me and mine, enlarging our territory for You, for and in Your service, keeping us from evil and from causing any pain. In the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, Amen.

In this day in which the Rich became poor for our sakes, let the rich man make the poor man share with him at his table. On this day came forth to us the Gift, even though we had not asked for it! Let us therefore bestow alms on those who cry and beg from us.

1 John 2:3-11

3  And by this we may be sure that we know him, if we keep his commandments.  4  He who says "I know him" but disobeys his commandments is a liar, and the truth is not in him;  5  but whoever keeps his word, in him truly love for God is perfected. By this we may be sure that we are in him:  6  he who says he abides in him ought to walk in the same way in which he walked.  7  Beloved, I am writing you no new commandment, but an old commandment which you had from the beginning; the old commandment is the word which you have heard.  8  Yet I am writing you a new commandment, which is true in him and in you, because the darkness is passing away and the true light is already shining.  9  He who says he is in the light and hates his brother is in the darkness still.  10  He who loves his brother abides in the light, and in it there is no cause for stumbling.  11  But he who hates his brother is in the darkness and walks in the darkness, and does not know where he is going, because the darkness has blinded his eyes.

Always

As my Father has sent me, so I send you.

Go therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. Go into the world, and proclaim this good news to all people. Those that believe and are baptized will discover salvation; but those that believe not will be lost.

Attend the promise of the Father, which you have heard from me. John, called the Baptizer, cleansed his followers by immersing them in water, but you will be made new by the very breath of God.

You will receive new power when the breath of God has come among you; and you will be my witnesses, beginning here in Jerusalem , Judea, and Samaria , to the uttermost parts of the earth.

Breathe deep the breath of God. Teach, even as I have taught you. And remember that I am with you always, even to the end of the world.

Receive the Holy Spirit!

V

Abba, Father, Lord God, thankful and humble, I seek to be less of me and more of Your Spirit which because of Jesus lives in me to guide, to convict, to mold me into Your image by likening my heart to His, through His living Words. O that this would be the Christmas that opens all hearts, ears and eyes to the truth in Jesus, and He would become the reason for the season in our hearts, minds and acts. In the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, Amen.

2 Samuel 7:1-5, 8-12, 14, 16

12  When your days are fulfilled and you lie down with your fathers, I will raise up your offspring after you, who shall come forth from your body, and I will establish his kingdom.  14  I will be his father, and he shall be my son. When he commits iniquity, I will chasten him with the rod of men, with the stripes of the sons of men;  16  And your house and your kingdom shall be made sure for ever before me; your throne shall be established for ever.’"
Psalm 89:2-5, 27, 29

27  And I will make him the first-born, the highest of the kings of the earth.  29  I will establish his line for ever and his throne as the days of the heavens.
Romans 16:25-27

25  Now to him who is able to strengthen you according to my gospel and the preaching of Jesus Christ, according to the revelation of the mystery which was kept secret for long ages  26  but is now disclosed and through the prophetic writings is made known to all nations, according to the command of the eternal God, to bring about the obedience of faith — 27  to the only wise God be glory for evermore through Jesus Christ! Amen.

An Invitation to Life

Everyone who believes in the Son will have life everlasting.

Whoever hears my word and believes in the One who has sent me will find eternal life and not be condemned. Instead, they will pass from death unto life. Do not be amazed at this, for the time is coming when even the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God, and those who hear his voice shall live. In their graves, the dead will recognize his voice and be raised up; those that have done good will be raised to new life, and those who have lived wrongfully will be raised to condemnation.

Herein lies the way to eternal life: know the only true God and Jesus Christ, the one sent to you by God. Take my words to heart. For God so loved the world that he offered his only Son a living sacrifice, that whoever believes in him will not perish, but be redeemed and have everlasting life. This good news of the kingdom shall be preached to the entire world as a witness to all nations; and then shall the end come.

V

Abba, Father, Lord God, thankful I seek humility above all, empting myself for Jesus to do His work in me; likening my heart to His, making my spirit one with You. Thank You for this day and for the awareness that is feeling Your presence and hand at work in me. In the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, Amen.

V

God never deserts a man, unless He is deserted by that man first. For even if a man shall have committed grievous sins once, twice, and a third time, God still looks for him, "so that he may be converted and live."

Isaiah 7:10-14

10  Again the LORD spoke to Ahaz,  11  "Ask a sign of the LORD your God; let it be deep as Sheol or high as heaven."  12  But Ahaz said, "I will not ask, and I will not put the LORD to the test."  13  And he said, "Hear then, O house of David! Is it too little for you to weary men, that you weary my God also?  14  Therefore the Lord himself will give you this sign: the virgin shall be with child, and bear a son, and shall name him Immanuel.  24  With bow and arrows men will come there, for all the land will be briers and thorns;  25  and as for all the hills which used to be hoed with a hoe, you will not come there for fear of briers and thorns; but they will become a place where cattle are let loose and where sheep tread.
Psalm 24:1-6

1  The earth is the LORD’s and the fulness thereof, the world and those who dwell therein;  2  for he has founded it upon the seas, and established it upon the rivers.  3  Who shall ascend the hill of the LORD? And who shall stand in his holy place?  4  He who has clean hands and a pure heart, who does not lift up his soul to what is false, and does not swear deceitfully.  5  He will receive blessing from the LORD, and vindication from the God of his salvation.  6  Such is the generation of those who seek him, who seek the face of the God of Jacob. [Selah]
Luke 1:26-38

26  In the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God to a city of Galilee named Nazareth,  27  to a virgin betrothed to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David; and the virgin’s name was Mary.  28  And he came to her and said, "Hail, full of grace, the Lord is with you!"  29  But she was greatly troubled at the saying, and considered in her mind what sort of greeting this might be.  30  And the angel said to her, "Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God.  31  And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus.  32  He will be great, and will be called the Son of the Most High; and the Lord God will give to him the throne of his father David,  33  and he will reign over the house of Jacob for ever; and of his kingdom there will be no end."  34  And Mary said to the angel, "How shall this be, since I have no husband?"  35  And the angel said to her, "The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; therefore the child to be born will be called holy, the Son of God.  36  And behold, your kinswoman Elizabeth in her old age has also conceived a son; and this is the sixth month with her who was called barren.  37  For with God nothing will be impossible."  38  And Mary said, "Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord; let it be to me according to your word." And the angel departed from her.

The Promise of the Spirit

It is the Spirit that has the power to give life.

If you love me, then keep my commandments. And I will pray to the Father, and he will give you another comforter to be with you forever. His is the breath of truth. The world does not accept him, because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you will know him, for he will dwell with you, and in you.

V

Abba, Father, Lord God, thankful and humbly as Jesus taught I pray in this manner:

“Our Father in heaven, may all the earth recognize that you are the one and holy God.

May your kingdom dwell among us. May your purpose be accomplished on earth, as it is in heaven. Provide us with daily bread to sustain us, and forgive our falling short. Help us to forgive those who have wronged us. Keep us from wandering into faithlessness, and deliver us from the evil one. For to you belongs all power and glory, eternally. Let it be so." In the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, Amen.

Judges 13:2-7, 24-25
Psalm 71:3-6, 16-17

3  Be thou to me a rock of refuge, a strong fortress, to save me, for thou art my rock and my fortress.  4  Rescue me, O my God, from the hand of the wicked, from the grasp of the unjust and cruel man.  5  For thou, O Lord, art my hope, my trust, O LORD,
Luke 1:5-25

5  In the days of Herod, king of Judea, there was a priest named Zechari’ah, of the division of Abi’jah; and he had a wife of the daughters of Aaron, and her name was Elizabeth.  6  And they were both righteous before God, walking in all the commandments and ordinances of the Lord blameless.  7  But they had no child, because Elizabeth was barren, and both were advanced in years.  8  Now while he was serving as priest before God when his division was on duty,  9  according to the custom of the priesthood, it fell to him by lot to enter the temple of the Lord and burn incense.  10  And the whole multitude of the people were praying outside at the hour of incense.  11  And there appeared to him an angel of the Lord standing on the right side of the altar of incense.  12  And Zechari’ah was troubled when he saw him, and fear fell upon him.  13  But the angel said to him, "Do not be afraid, Zechari’ah, for your prayer is heard, and your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and you shall call his name John.  14  And you will have joy and gladness, and many will rejoice at his birth;  15  for he will be great before the Lord, and he shall drink no wine nor strong drink, and he will be filled with the Holy Spirit, even from his mother’s womb.  16  And he will turn many of the sons of Israel to the Lord their God,  17  and he will go before him in the spirit and power of Eli’jah, to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children, and the disobedient to the wisdom of the just, to make ready for the Lord a people prepared."  18  And Zechari’ah said to the angel, "How shall I know this? For I am an old man, and my wife is advanced in years."  19  And the angel answered him, "I am Gabriel, who stand in the presence of God; and I was sent to speak to you, and to bring you this good news.  20  And behold, you will be silent and unable to speak until the day that these things come to pass, because you did not believe my words, which will be fulfilled in their time."  21  And the people were waiting for Zechari’ah, and they wondered at his delay in the temple.  22  And when he came out, he could not speak to them, and they perceived that he had seen a vision in the temple; and he made signs to them and remained dumb.  23  And when his time of service was ended, he went to his home.  24  After these days his wife Elizabeth conceived, and for five months she hid herself, saying,  25  "Thus the Lord has done to me in the days when he looked on me, to take away my reproach among men."

The Words of Jesus of Nazareth by Lee Cantelon

The Call

You have not chosen me. I have chosen you, and appointed you to produce good fruit from the lives that you live, fruit that will last.

Why do you call me good, unless you believe I am God? You know the commandments: do not commit adultery; Do not kill; Do not steal; Do not bear false witness; Honor your father and your mother. Doing this, you will have treasures in heaven. And yet, you fall short by honoring me with your words alone, and not using everything – your wealth, your possessions, and your life – to help those in need.

If you wish to follow me, you must first put aside your own desires and your self-centered ways. Sacrifice your pride and follow me. Those who desire eternal life must put aside their old way of life. All who do this for my sake will discover new life – both here on earth as well as in heaven.

I add this to this story: many are called – into the kingdom – but few are chosen. The time has come. The kingdom of God is near at hand. I have called you from the world’s way of living. Repent, put on the garments of salvation, and believe this good news.

No one can come to me unless the Father, who has sent me, draws him; and I will raise up that person on the last day. All of you whom the Father has given me will come to me: and whoever comes to me, I will never refuse.

Because I have told you such things, do you believe? Truly, you will witness even greater things than these.

Enter therefore through the narrow gate; for wide is the path, and broad is the way that leads to destruction, and many go that way. But narrow is the gate and the path which leads to life, and there are few that find it. Make every effort to go through the gate that leads to life. One day, many will want to exchange their way for the right way, and find it to be too late.

V

Abba, Father, Lord God, thankful and humbly I came today to ask, pray for help as I try to explain myself and my continued attempts to understand, forgive and love others first, to seek guidance and direction as I wonder if I am pursuing the right path because I keep feeling I take one step forward and two steps back in my walk, in my growth and in my closeness to You. Then I read the words of St. Philip Neri and I feel once again You are with me, You are watching me, You know me, You are guiding me when I look to You for guidance, You are directing me when I look to You for direction, and You will provide for that which I cannot do on my own and that which I need based on what is best for me according to Your will; through total submission and unconditional supplication, awareness and vibrant prayer! In the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, Amen.

The perfection of a Christian consists in mortifying his will for the love of Christ. Where there is no great mortification, there is no great sanctity.

— St. Philip Neri

Jeremiah 23:5-8
Psalm 72:1-2, 12-13, 18-19

12  For he delivers the needy when he calls, the poor and him who has no helper.  13  He has pity on the weak and the needy, and saves the lives of the needy.
Matthew 1:18-25

18  Now the birth of Jesus Christ took place in this way. When his mother Mary had been betrothed to Joseph, before they came together she was found to be with child of the Holy Spirit;  19  and her husband Joseph, being a just man and unwilling to put her to shame, resolved to divorce her quietly.  20  But as he considered this, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, "Joseph, son of David, do not fear to take Mary your wife, for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit;  21  she will bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins."

22  All this took place to fulfil what the Lord had spoken by the prophet:  23  "Behold, a virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and his name shall be called Emmanuel" (which means, God with us).  24  When Joseph woke from sleep, he did as the angel of the Lord commanded him; he took his wife,  25  but knew her not until she had borne a son; and he called his name Jesus.

There’s No Such Thing as "Business" Ethics (Unabridged) Best-selling author and expert on leadership John C. Maxwell claims there is only one rule for business. How does a person judge what is ethical? Sometimes it’s clear. You know Enron’s leaders were in the wrong. But is it always easy to see where the line is in your life? What’s the standard? And can it work in all situations? John C. Maxwell thinks it can. When the New York Times best-selling author, successful businessman, and former pastor was asked about his thoughts on business ethics, his response was, "There’s no such thing. There’s only ethics." Maxwell asserts there’s one ethical standard for all behavior. And you might be surprised by what it’s based on. Did you know that a variation of the Golden Rule exists in every major religion? In There’s No Such Thing as Business Ethics, Maxwell shows how people can live with integrity by using the Golden Rule as their standard (regardless of religion, culture, or circumstances). Along the way, he delves into the desires of the human heart, reveals the five most common causes that get people off track ethically, and teaches how to develop the Midas touch when it comes to integrity.
