and there recall that your brother
has anything against you,

and the judge will hand you over to the guard,
and you will be thrown into prison.

Formed: Empowered Righteousness

Christ doesn’t only want us to follow the commandments; he wants us to be animated by love. To help us achieve this calling, God sent us the Holy Spirit on Pentecost. Now, empowered by grace, we find strength to love God and neighbor, and we recognize how we have fallen short in the past.

Dear God, my Abba Father, Lord Jesus my Savior, Holy Spirit within me.
Your teachings like Your love is never ending. Like with suffering we must learn to walk endure. Walk beyond ourselves covered in Your grace and mercy. Giving to others that which we receive from You.
Acting justly, Loving mercy and Walking humbly.
Thank You for teaching me and mine these things that bring me closer to You. One Walk with Jesus!

Reading I 1 Kings 18:20-39

Ahab sent to all the children of Israel
and had the prophets assemble on Mount Carmel.

Elijah appealed to all the people and said,
“How long will you straddle the issue?
If the LORD is God, follow him; if Baal, follow him.”
The people, however, did not answer him.
So Elijah said to the people,
“I am the only surviving prophet of the LORD,
and there are four hundred and fifty prophets of Baal.
Give us two young bulls.
Let them choose one, cut it into pieces, and place it on the wood,
but start no fire.
I shall prepare the other and place it on the wood,
but shall start no fire.
You shall call on your gods, and I will call on the LORD.
The God who answers with fire is God.”
All the people answered, “Agreed!”

Elijah then said to the prophets of Baal,
“Choose one young bull and prepare it first,
for there are more of you.
Call upon your gods, but do not start the fire.”
Taking the young bull that was turned over to them, they prepared it
and called on Baal from morning to noon, saying,
“Answer us, Baal!”
But there was no sound, and no one answering.
And they hopped around the altar they had prepared.
When it was noon, Elijah taunted them:
“Call louder, for he is a god and may be meditating,
or may have retired, or may be on a journey.
Perhaps he is asleep and must be awakened.”
They called out louder and slashed themselves with swords and spears,
as was their custom, until blood gushed over them.
Noon passed and they remained in a prophetic state
until the time for offering sacrifice.
But there was not a sound;
no one answered, and no one was listening.

Then Elijah said to all the people, “Come here to me.”
When the people had done so, he repaired the altar of the LORD
that had been destroyed.
He took twelve stones, for the number of tribes of the sons of Jacob,
to whom the LORD had said, “Your name shall be Israel.”
He built an altar in honor of the LORD with the stones,
and made a trench around the altar
large enough for two measures of grain.
When he had arranged the wood,
he cut up the young bull and laid it on the wood.
“Fill four jars with water,” he said,
“and pour it over the burnt offering and over the wood.”
“Do it again,” he said, and they did it again.
“Do it a third time,” he said,
and they did it a third time.
The water flowed around the altar,
and the trench was filled with the water.

At the time for offering sacrifice,
the prophet Elijah came forward and said,
“LORD, God of Abraham, Isaac, and Israel,
let it be known this day that you are God in Israel
and that I am your servant
and have done all these things by your command.
Answer me, LORD!
Answer me, that this people may know that you, LORD, are God
and that you have brought them back to their senses.”
The LORD’s fire came down
and consumed the burnt offering, wood, stones, and dust,
and it lapped up the water in the trench.
Seeing this, all the people fell prostrate and said,
“The LORD is God! The LORD is God!”

Formed: The Path to Fulfillment

In the Christian life, we can be tempted to let others become lax in following God’s laws. However, we must remember that God’s lawgiving is an expression of his love, his desire for our fulfillment. So, to love others well, we must call them to follow Christ with all their strength!

Reading I 1 Kings 17:7-16

The brook near where Elijah was hiding ran dry,
because no rain had fallen in the land.
So the LORD said to Elijah:
“Move on to Zarephath of Sidon and stay there.
I have designated a widow there to provide for you.”
He left and went to Zarephath.
As he arrived at the entrance of the city,
a widow was gathering sticks there; he called out to her,
“Please bring me a small cupful of water to drink.”
She left to get it, and he called out after her,
“Please bring along a bit of bread.”
She answered, “As the LORD, your God, lives,
I have nothing baked;
there is only a handful of flour in my jar
and a little oil in my jug.
Just now I was collecting a couple of sticks,
to go in and prepare something for myself and my son;
when we have eaten it, we shall die.”
Elijah said to her, “Do not be afraid.
Go and do as you propose.
But first make me a little cake and bring it to me.
Then you can prepare something for yourself and your son.
For the LORD, the God of Israel, says,
‘The jar of flour shall not go empty,
nor the jug of oil run dry,
until the day when the LORD sends rain upon the earth.’”
She left and did as Elijah had said.
She was able to eat for a year, and Elijah and her son as well;
the jar of flour did not go empty,
nor the jug of oil run dry,
as the LORD had foretold through Elijah.

But if salt loses its taste, with what can it be seasoned?

Formed: The Mission of the Disciple

Though we are in Ordinary Time, there is nothing ordinary about following Christ. As the Gospel says, we must be light and salt. As light, we illuminate the world with truth. As salt, we preserve ourselves and others from the corruption of sin. Though these are lofty challenges, let’s remain hopeful. God raises up heroes in every generation, and that hero can be you.

After Jesus had been taken up to heaven,
 the Apostles returned to Jerusalem
 from the mount called Olivet, which is near Jerusalem,

 Peter and John and James and Andrew,
 Philip and Thomas, Bartholomew and Matthew,
 James son of Alphaeus, Simon the Zealot,

Formed: The Model

Just before his death, Christ gave us a magnificent gift: his own mother. Now, Mary acts as the Mother of the Church, helping the baptized come closer to her son. Moreover, Mary invites the Church to imitate her obedience and unending love, for she is the perfect disciple.

Dear God, my Abba Father, Lord Jesus my Savior, Holy Spirit within me.
Thank You for hearing my prayers. For the gift of our Holy Mother Mary, as an example of perfect discipleship through faith and obedience. Through Her and praying the mysteries of the Holy Rosary I truly seek for me and mine, that we will imitate what they contain, and obtain what they promise.
Not my will, but Yours Lord God.

Now hope that sees is not hope.

On the last and greatest day of the feast,

He said this in reference to the Spirit
that those who came to believe in him were to receive.
There was, of course, no Spirit yet,
because Jesus had not yet been glorified.

Reflection

Formed: Fulfillment, Strength, & Comfort

Because of Christ’s priestly intercession, the Holy Spirit came to sustain and animate the Church. Now, the Paraclete dwells in the baptized, making them the new Temple of God. With this presence of God within us, we find strength and comfort; we are empowered to live the Gospel. In honor of this solemnity, let’s ask for renewed docility to the Spirit’s promptings!

My prayer…

Dear God, my Abba Father, Lord Jesus my Savior, Holy Spirit within me.
Lord as I reflect on how the Acts of the Apostles is preparing the Church for renewal. I wonder how and when because all I see is corruption and division. Just like in times past. Yet Your Church lives and the faithful grow in number and faith. Help me see what You see. Give me eyes of faith. Hope that never stops. And a heart likened to Yours.
You know me, know what I need guide me accordingly.
Continue to bless and protect me and mine. Teaching us in Your ways and how to be leaders in the renewal and revival of Your Church. Examples of Your presence within us.
Not our will, but Yours Lord God.
Jesus, Mary, I love You, save souls.
In Jesus name I pray.

Reading I Acts 25:13b-21

King Agrippa and Bernice arrived in Caesarea
on a visit to Festus.
Since they spent several days there,
Festus referred Paul’s case to the king, saying,
“There is a man here left in custody by Felix.
When I was in Jerusalem the chief priests and the elders of the Jews
brought charges against him and demanded his condemnation.
I answered them that it was not Roman practice
to hand over an accused person before he has faced his accusers
and had the opportunity to defend himself against their charge.
So when they came together here, I made no delay;
the next day I took my seat on the tribunal
and ordered the man to be brought in.
His accusers stood around him,
but did not charge him with any of the crimes I suspected.
Instead they had some issues with him about their own religion
and about a certain Jesus who had died
but who Paul claimed was alive.
Since I was at a loss how to investigate this controversy,
I asked if he were willing to go to Jerusalem
and there stand trial on these charges.
And when Paul appealed that he be held in custody
for the Emperor’s decision,
I ordered him held until I could send him to Caesar.”

Gospel John 21:15-19

After Jesus had revealed himself to his disciples and eaten breakfast with them,
he said to Simon Peter,
“Simon, son of John, do you love me more than these?”
Simon Peter answered him, “Yes, Lord, you know that I love you.”
Jesus said to him, “Feed my lambs.”
He then said to Simon Peter a second time,
“Simon, son of John, do you love me?”
Simon Peter answered him, “Yes, Lord, you know that I love you.”
He said to him, “Tend my sheep.”
He said to him the third time,
“Simon, son of John, do you love me?”
Peter was distressed that he had said to him a third time,
“Do you love me?” and he said to him,
“Lord, you know everything; you know that I love you.”
Jesus said to him, “Feed my sheep.
Amen, amen, I say to you, when you were younger,
you used to dress yourself and go where you wanted;
but when you grow old, you will stretch out your hands,
and someone else will dress you
and lead you where you do not want to go.”
He said this signifying by what kind of death he would glorify God.

Formed: A Shared Endeavor

At the end of John’s Gospel account, Jesus calls Peter to participate in his role as the shepherd of the flock. Through apostolic succession, this mission is passed down to all ordained ministers. As Dr. Gray notes, however, the laity has a part to play as well. Indeed, each and every one of the baptized has a responsibility to share the truth of the Gospel.
