A thought…
Purity of heart isn’t possible alone. Only in and with Jesus can we receive His Spirit and begin the process of dying to ourselves.

A devotion…
The Way to Purity
My Utmost for His Highest

Initially we trust in our ignorance, calling it innocence, and next we trust our innocence, calling it purity. Then when we hear these strong statements from our Lord, we shrink back, saying, “But I never felt any of those awful things in my heart.” We resent what He reveals. Either Jesus Christ is the supreme authority on the human heart, or He is not worth paying any attention to. Am I prepared to trust the penetration of His Word into my heart, or would I prefer to trust my own “innocent ignorance”?

Purity is something far too deep for me to arrive at naturally. But when the Holy Spirit comes into me, He brings into the center of my personal life the very Spirit that was exhibited in the life of Jesus Christ, namely, the Holy Spirit, which is absolute unblemished purity.

A thought…
Sin is naturally, unnatural. What do you think about sin? Do you? How often do you ask yourself why you do what you don’t want to. My list is long, but starts with anger, lust, and the thought of have I become to patient avoiding to much. One thing I do know is, a lone I’m stuck in my sins. Only in and through Jesus can I be what God created me to be. So I fight in each moment to stay connected to Him.

So the trouble is not with the law, for it is spiritual and good. The trouble is with me, for I am all too human, a slave to sin. I don’t really understand myself, for I want to do what is right, but I don’t do it. Instead, I do what I hate.

People don’t grow where they’re planted; they grow where they’re loved…

I still mess up more than I want. When I do, instead of beating myself up, I hear Jesus’ gentle and kind voice reminding me again to stop laying sod where He’s planting seed in my life. His reason is simple: God’s more interested in making us grow than having us look finished. He wants me to realize I’m just not quite there yet.

The Bible is filled with stories of conflict and resolution — woven into the human experience. Perhaps one of the greatest stories is Joseph and his brothers, found in Genesis 37-50…

Joseph’s heart is tender and forgiving toward his brothers, and he speaks words that echo to this day for all of us who wonder if anything good can come out of the conflict we are experiencing: “You intended to harm me, but God intended it for good to accomplish what is now being done, the saving of many lives” (Genesis 50:20, NIV)…

…life isn’t conflict-free today. Nor will it ever be. As a pastor once said, “You are either just getting out of trouble, in trouble now, or about to enter trouble.” It’s inevitable. But so is God’s power! When we look at conflict in light of eternity, it takes on a different perspective.

What hope it brings my current situation to know there’s no conflict so difficult, no moment so dark, no situation so hopeless that You can’t bring good out of it. A thought…
Most Saturdays I get to enjoy a long walk with Jesus. Unlike my daily fight to focus on Him. During this time I feel like I really get to exercise my faith and grow closer to Him. Whether I listen to His word or a book or my favorite worship music. It’s just me and Him. You see I firmly believe the difference between believer and follower is how much time we spend with Him, and the difference between follower and disciple is how much time we spend doing His work and spreading His gospel. Those not evenly yoked will never be able to understand and know what their missing.

There is no thrill for us in walking, yet it is the test for all of our steady and enduring qualities. To “walk and not faint” is the highest stretch possible as a measure of strength. The word walk is used in the Bible to express the character of a person— “…John…looking at Jesus as He walked…said, ‘Behold the Lamb of God!’ ” (John 1:35-36). There is nothing abstract or obscure in the Bible; everything is vivid and real. God does not say, “Be spiritual,” but He says, “Walk before Me…” (Genesis 17:1).

A thought…
Ever wonder why those closest to you can be the most hurtful, critical and quickest to judge and attack your faith when you trip or fall in action or word, or just don’t do or say what they want or expect you to. Before my Mom went to be with the Lord, I talked to her about wanting to understand more about what Jesus meant when He spoke the words in today’s verse. For I feel the answer to my question starts in these words of His.

Then Jesus told them, “A prophet is honored everywhere except in his own hometown and among his own family.”

Then Jesus told them, “A prophet is honored everywhere except in his own hometown and among his relatives and his own family.”

But I tell you the truth, no prophet is accepted in his own hometown.

Dear Lord God, Abba Father, Jesus my Savior, hear my prayer. Give me the understanding and wisdom I need for today. Bless me and mine, keep us from evil and causing pain. Touch us, opening and likening our heart to Yours. Amen

A thought…
Have you ever been around someone obsessed with your happiness. So much so, that they don’t give you a chance to be. Maybe it’s because they don’t understand the difference between joy and happiness. Maybe even though they believe, they don’t really know or have a personal relationship with Jesus.

A verse…

Then he said to them, “Go your way. Eat the fat and drink sweet wine and send portions to anyone who has nothing ready, for this day is holy to our Lord. And do not be grieved, for the joy of the Lord is your strength.” (Nehemiah 8:10)

More thoughts…
Joy and happiness are wonderful feelings to experience, but are very different. Joy is more consistent and is cultivated internally. It comes when you make peace with who you are, why you are and how you are, whereas happiness tends to be externally triggered and is based on other people, things, places, thoughts and events.

For many, the words joy and happiness are the same. We don’t have a way to differentiate them. However, when we look at the ways we get joy, found in the Bible, we see that these two things are very different. We can have joy and be unhappy! Happiness comes from circumstances in our lives. When things go our way- we are happy. However, when things don’t go our way, we are no longer happy- but we can still have joy. Why is this – and how do we focus on joy and not happiness?

A prayer…
Dear Lord God, Abba Father, Jesus my Savior. You tell us to take up our cross and follow You. I pray for those who don’t know the joy that comes from following and having a relationship with and don’t understand how this differs from happiness. I am so thankful for all Your blessings, and fight to focus on You in every moment and to maintain a grateful spirit. Help them see this in me and a understand the peace and joy I have in and with You. Even when circumstances may keep me from being happy. This I pray in Jesus name. Amen
