KEEP YOUR EYES ON ME! Waves of adversity are washing over you, and you feel tempted to give up. As your circumstances consume more and more of your attention, you are losing sight of Me. Yet I am with you always, holding youby your right hand. I am fully aware of your situation, and I will not allow you to betempted beyond what you are able tobear.

Your gravest danger is worrying about tomorrow. If you try to carry tomorrow’s burdens today, you will stagger under the load and eventually fall flat. You must discipline yourself to live within the boundaries of today. It is in the present moment that I walk close to you, helping you carry your burdens. Keep your focus on My Presence in the present.

Elijah Taken into Heaven

REFRAMING JESUS

2 KINGS 2:9-12—JESUS TALKS WITH ELIJAH AND MOSES

Elijah has quite a track record: spitefully teasing the false prophets of Baal, parting the Jordan River, making the rain stop, calling for wet wood to burst into flame, and standing closer to God than anyone since Moses. After Elijah’s ascent into heaven, the Jews waited in anticipation for his return. In later tradition they even set out an empty chair at their circumcisions and a cup of wine at Passover in hopes that he would join them—they believed that the return of Elijah meant the promised Savior would be close on his heels and would join them.

Elijah actually does show up on earth again, but not to pave the way for the Messiah as the people hoped. When Jesus takes his three closest followers up to a mountain, Jesus’ appearance is awesomely transformed—his clothes become dazzling white—then Elijah and Moses appear and speak with him (Matthew 17:1-13; Mark 9:2-13; Luke 9:28-36). Elijah’s “return” to earth affirms that Jesus is the promised Messiah and the fulfillment of the Old Testament prophecies—the hope the world was waiting for. Elijah’s amazing departure to heaven, escorted by a chariot of fire is nothing compared to the glory of Elijah having this amazing role in revealing Jesus as the true Savior for humanity.

GALATIANS 5:22-23—BECOMING MORE LIKE JESUS

Every once in awhile in one of those big grocery-store warehouses, the label of a can will snag on something and tear off. Then what? Without the picture and colorful lettering, how can anyone know what’s inside? Would you buy a can with no label and hope for the best? Maybe if you’re looking for a fun party game—but cans without labels make planning dinner a difficult prospect. The outside of a label-less can conceals whatever is inside, good or bad. Paul reminds us that when the Holy Spirit is truly alive and at work within us, people will know. The good work that is happening within us oozes out in the way we live. Our lives become the labels, but rather than chicken soup, our labels show things like “patience,” “gentleness,” and “goodness.” The Holy Spirit is hard at work inside of us, changing us in profound ways. And that change spills right out into our lives as we are made to be more and more like Jesus.
