ECCLESIASTES 5:16-17
GOING TO JESUS WITH OUR DOUBTS

Ecclesiastes is full of raw uncertainty. Solomon is simply expressing feelings that—if we’re honest—many of us deal with in life. Is there really any meaning in life? What’s the point of any of this? Sadly, church and Christian friendships can feel like unsafe arenas to voice these doubts. We often don’t feel we can be real about the questions we’ve got and the confusion we feel, because followers of Jesus are “supposed” to have it all together, all the time. But Jesus shows us something different: He wants us to come to him with our doubts. In John 20:24-29, Thomas, one of Jesus’ disciples, refuses to believe in Jesus’ resurrection without evidence, because the experience of his life tells him that the impossibly good must be impossible. But Jesus allows him to feel the holes in his hands and feet, and believe. Jesus embraces us even with all of our real human uncertainty.

A thought…
Time, the most valuable gift we can give, and have. Yet we so often give such little thought about just how and with who we spend it. Oh and how much of it we waste worrying about things we will never change. And chasing things we will never find under the sun. Thinking about what we want to be, without knowing who we are. Only in the Son can we find our daily bread and begin to understand what God planted in our hearts.

OneWalk: Under the Sun, with the Son

A thought…
I’m so troubled when I hear about someone ending their own life. Whether the celebrity or the bullied child. Something has to be missing. Something has to be wrong. As Ecclesiastes Chapter 1 states ‘even with all his wisdom and wealth, Solomon still feels empty and dissatisfied.

Centuries later, in a letter written by the apostle Paul, we discover the reason for Solomon’s sense of utter futility. All the wisdom of the world can never satisfy the human spirit. Only Jesus can bring peace and a sense of purpose. He is both the power and the wisdom of God. “For our benefit God made him to be wisdom itself”
(1 Corinthians 1:18-31).’

Jesus is the answer and He is the cure!

Ecclesiastes 2:17-18— Work, Solomon laments, is “meaningless” in the end, because it’s “like chasing the wind.” Jesus later puts an exclamation point on this truth: “Human effort accomplishes nothing.” But, he says, his words “are spirit and life”( John 6:63 ).

A thought…
Ever since my oldest sister gave me a CD set of her Pastors sermons on Ecclesiastes it’s been one of my favorite books in the Bible. Like all my other favorite books, each time I read them I learn or see something new or different. That’s why when I’m or one of mine is dealing with something or someone that requires divine truth and or wisdom I refer to them. Such is the case know with my son, so I decided to read and study it again as I lift it all up to my Lord God in prayer in the name of Jesus.

"Everything is meaningless," says the Teacher, "completely meaningless!"

Ecclesiastes 1:18— We believe that increasing our knowledge and wisdom will ultimately satisfy us, but Solomon says that it “only increases sorrow.” Later, the apostle Paul, one of the most knowledgeable men on the earth at the time, says: “For I decided that while I was with you I would forget everything except Jesus Christ, the one who was crucified”( 1 Corinthians 2:2 ).

A prayer…
O God, my Abba Father, Jesus my Savior why? What is it that leads us to sin knowing it only separates us from You. To want to know and experience for ourselves, rather than trust You. To repeat the sins of our fathers, even when we cursed them. Is it all meaninglessness, except for You. Then why? So much I want to understand but don’t and won’t. So I choose trust! To trust in You. To lift up each of mine by name (…) to You. Asking that You bless them, that Your hand be with them to keep them from evil and causing pain; and to know and follow Your will for them. Amen

Words are so powerful. The wrong words kill and destroy. The right words give life and bring healing. So is knowing when to speak and when to just listen. Let the Holy Spirit guide you on what and when to speak.

Silence and Spiritual Walk: The Silence of Empathy

Then the three of them sat silently with him for an entire week (v. 13). This showed a deep empathy for his physical, mental, and spiritual suffering. It also showed respect—Job should be the one to speak first. Perhaps words seemed powerless in the face of what had happened. Perhaps they were afraid of making things worse by speaking (as did indeed happen). If only they had never opened their mouths at all (see Job 13:1–12)!

Dear Lord God, Abba Father, Jesus my Savior I am lost and don’t know what to do but be there. Give me strength and patience to be there wisely. Let the Holy Spirit guide my words and control my emotions and expressions. Let Jesus fill my heart with His love. Let the healing power of Your grace rain down on us today and bring life to our dreams. Amen
