Reading 1 1 Corinthians 5:1-8

Brothers and sisters:
It is widely reported that there is immorality among you,
and immorality of a kind not found even among pagans–
a man living with his father’s wife.
And you are inflated with pride.
Should you not rather have been sorrowful?
The one who did this deed should be expelled from your midst.
I, for my part, although absent in body but present in spirit,
have already, as if present,
pronounced judgment on the one who has committed this deed,
in the name of our Lord Jesus:
when you have gathered together and I am with you in spirit
with the power of the Lord Jesus,
you are to deliver this man to Satan
for the destruction of his flesh,
so that his spirit may be saved on the day of the Lord.
Your boasting is not appropriate.
Do you not know that a little yeast leavens all the dough?
Clear out the old yeast, so that you may become a fresh batch of dough,
inasmuch as you are unleavened.
For our Paschal Lamb, Christ, has been sacrificed.
Therefore, let us celebrate the feast,
not with the old yeast, the yeast of malice and wickedness,

Gospel Luke 6:6-11

On a certain sabbath Jesus went into the synagogue and taught,
and there was a man there whose right hand was withered.
The scribes and the Pharisees watched him closely
to see if he would cure on the sabbath
so that they might discover a reason to accuse him.
But he realized their intentions
and said to the man with the withered hand,
“Come up and stand before us.”
And he rose and stood there.
Then Jesus said to them,
“I ask you, is it lawful to do good on the sabbath
rather than to do evil,
to save life rather than to destroy it?”
Looking around at them all, he then said to him,
“Stretch out your hand.”
He did so and his hand was restored.
But they became enraged
and discussed together what they might do to Jesus.

Reflection

Formed: Christ’s Simplicity

Christ, in the Eucharist, displays the simplicity with which we are called to live. The Eucharist is not some elaborate form of bread; it is unleavened bread. Emulated our Lord and Savior, strive to live a life of humble simplicity.

My prayer…

Dear God, my Abba Father, Lord Jesus my Savior, Holy Spirit within me.
Lord thank You for showing me the
simplicity in Jesus… how I must die to myself to follow Him. I have found that finding and maintaining balance in my daily one walk with Jesus keeps me ready and focused on Jesus. Thankful, though for me this came with age. So I pray for my children and grandchildren, as well as all the younger generations. Keep it simple… Find Jesus, make Him first and keep Him above all.

Hear my prayer Lord.
Continue to teach and guide each of mine in Your truth and ways. Giving them Your wisdom. Bless and protect them. Help them produce fruit for Your Kingdom.
Not my will, but Yours Lord God.
Jesus, Mary, I love You, save souls.
In Jesus name I pray.

Great crowds were traveling with Jesus,
and he turned and addressed them,
“If anyone comes to me without hating his father and mother,
wife and children, brothers and sisters,
and even his own life,
he cannot be my disciple.
Whoever does not carry his own cross and come after me
cannot be my disciple.
Which of you wishing to construct a tower
does not first sit down and calculate the cost
to see if there is enough for its completion?
Otherwise, after laying the foundation
and finding himself unable to finish the work
the onlookers should laugh at him and say,
‘This one began to build but did not have the resources to finish.’
Or what king marching into battle would not first sit down
and decide whether with ten thousand troops
he can successfully oppose another king
advancing upon him with twenty thousand troops?
But if not, while he is still far away,
he will send a delegation to ask for peace terms.
In the same way,
anyone of you who does not renounce all his possessions
cannot be my disciple.”

Formed: First Things First

To be a disciple of Jesus requires much. The cost is clear: Christ must be the center of your life if you are to be his disciple. What is keeping Jesus from the center of your life? Ask God for the grace to put him before all else.

Dear God, my Abba Father, Lord Jesus my Savior, Holy Spirit within me.
Lord, the more times I read today’s Gospel, the more I think about what Jesus is teaching me. You… Jesus must be first, ‘at the center’ of it all. Then as Dr. Gray explains in this reflection. We should never hate as the world hates. But through passionate preference for You through Jesus and His ways above everything else. Reflect Your, His presence, love and wisdom in away that others will notice and seek.
Thank You for showing and teaching me these things. For walking with me and mine, and teaching them as well. For blessing and protecting us. Hear our prayers for ourselves, each other and all those yet to find that burning passionate preference for You.
Not my will, but Yours Lord God.

Learn from myself and Apollos not to go beyond what is written,
so that none of you will be inflated with pride
in favor of one person over against another.
Who confers distinction upon you?
What do you possess that you have not received?
But if you have received it,
why are you boasting as if you did not receive it?
You are already satisfied; you have already grown rich;
you have become kings without us!
Indeed, I wish that you had become kings,
so that we also might become kings with you.
For as I see it, God has exhibited us Apostles as the last of all,
like people sentenced to death,
since we have become a spectacle to the world,

Formed: Entrusted with Much

St. Paul’s exhortation to the Corinthians on humility comes to a head in today’s reading. Rather than pursuing worldly wisdom, he exhorts them to be fools for Christ. Embrace humility today, imitating Paul’s example.

Dear God, my Abba Father, Lord Jesus my Savior, Holy Spirit within me.
I’m just a fool on Christ’s account!
In a time when truth as lost it’s meaning. Yet everyone seeks truth. Only fools know that truth is in Jesus Christ. So I am happy to be foolish in my quest to follow and imitate Jesus. An example for each of mine.
Praying today as I do each day that You will continue to walk with me and mine. Blessing and protecting us. Teaching and guiding us.

Thank You for loving me enough. For blessing me with each of mine. For blessing and protecting each of them. Teaching us all in Your ways. Through Your Word and with trustworthy stewards.

Gospel Luke 5:1-11

While the crowd was pressing in on Jesus and listening to the word of God,
he was standing by the Lake of Gennesaret.
He saw two boats there alongside the lake;
the fishermen had disembarked and were washing their nets.
Getting into one of the boats, the one belonging to Simon,
he asked him to put out a short distance from the shore.
Then he sat down and taught the crowds from the boat.
After he had finished speaking, he said to Simon,
"Put out into deep water and lower your nets for a catch."
Simon said in reply,
"Master, we have worked hard all night and have caught nothing,
but at your command I will lower the nets."
When they had done this, they caught a great number of fish
and their nets were tearing.
They signaled to their partners in the other boat
to come to help them.
They came and filled both boats
so that the boats were in danger of sinking.
When Simon Peter saw this, he fell at the knees of Jesus and said,
"Depart from me, Lord, for I am a sinful man."
For astonishment at the catch of fish they had made seized him
and all those with him,
and likewise James and John, the sons of Zebedee,
who were partners of Simon.
Jesus said to Simon, "Do not be afraid;
from now on you will be catching men."
When they brought their boats to the shore,
they left everything and followed him.

but only God, who causes the growth.

Gospel Luke 4:38-44

After Jesus left the synagogue, he entered the house of Simon.
Simon’s mother-in-law was afflicted with a severe fever,
and they interceded with him about her.
He stood over her, rebuked the fever, and it left her.
She got up immediately and waited on them.
At sunset, all who had people sick with various diseases
brought them to him.
He laid his hands on each of them and cured them.
And demons also came out from many, shouting, “You are the Son of God.”
But he rebuked them and did not allow them to speak
because they knew that he was the Christ.
At daybreak, Jesus left and went to a deserted place.
The crowds went looking for him, and when they came to him,
they tried to prevent him from leaving them.
But he said to them, “To the other towns also
I must proclaim the good news of the Kingdom of God,
because for this purpose I have been sent.”
And he was preaching in the synagogues of Judea.

Formed: Paul’s Reminder

Paul reminds us that all growth in the spiritual life comes from God. Our job then is to focus solely on God. When we lose focus and allow distraction to seep into our spiritual life, we become people of the flesh.

Dear God, my Abba Father, Lord Jesus my Savior, Holy Spirit within me.
You have taught me that only You cause the growth within me. I just need to stay focused on You, and surround myself in Jesus.
Others may preach and teach, but only You allow me to follow the light of Your truths and become who You created me to be, and know Your will for me.
Thank You for this. For walking with me, and mine. For teaching them this too, and guiding our steps. For blessing us as You do, and protecting us was we walk through each day.
Hear our prayers.
Not my will, but Yours Lord God.

Reading 1 1 Corinthians 2:10B-16

Brothers and sisters:
The Spirit scrutinizes everything, even the depths of God.
Among men, who knows what pertains to the man
 except his spirit that is within?
Similarly, no one knows what pertains to God except the Spirit of God.
We have not received the spirit of the world
 but the Spirit who is from God,
so that we may understand the things freely given us by God.
 And we speak about them not with words taught by human wisdom,
but with words taught by the Spirit,
 describing spiritual realities in spiritual terms.
Now the natural man does not accept what pertains to the Spirit of God,
for to him it is foolishness, and he cannot understand it,
because it is judged spiritually.
The one who is spiritual, however, can judge everything
but is not subject to judgment by anyone.
For “who has known the mind of the Lord, so as to counsel him?”
But we have the mind of Christ.

Gospel Luke 4:31-37

Jesus went down to Capernaum, a town of Galilee.
He taught them on the sabbath,
and they were astonished at his teaching
because he spoke with authority.
In the synagogue there was a man with the spirit of an unclean demon,
and he cried out in a loud voice,
“What have you to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth?
Have you come to destroy us?
I know who you are–the Holy One of God!”
Jesus rebuked him and said, “Be quiet! Come out of him!”
Then the demon threw the man down in front of them
and came out of him without doing him any harm.
They were all amazed and said to one another,
“What is there about his word?
For with authority and power he commands the unclean spirits,
and they come out.”
And news of him spread everywhere in the surrounding region.
