Reading I
James 4:13-17

Beloved:
Come now, you who say,
“Today or tomorrow we shall go into such and such a town,
spend a year there doing business, and make a profit”–
you have no idea what your life will be like tomorrow.
You are a puff of smoke that appears briefly and then disappears.
Instead you should say,
“If the Lord wills it, we shall live to do this or that.”
But now you are boasting in your arrogance.
All such boasting is evil.
So for one who knows the right thing to do
and does not do it, it is a sin.

Responsorial Psalm
49:2-3, 6-7, 8-10, 11

R. (Matthew 5:3) Blessed are the poor in spirit; the Kingdom of heaven is theirs!

Hear this, all you peoples;
hearken, all who dwell in the world,
Of lowly birth or high degree,
 rich and poor alike.

R. Blessed are the poor in spirit; the Kingdom of heaven is theirs!

Why should I fear in evil days
when my wicked ensnarers ring me round?
They trust in their wealth;
the abundance of their riches is their boast.

R. Blessed are the poor in spirit; the Kingdom of heaven is theirs!

Yet in no way can a man redeem himself,
 or pay his own ransom to God;
Too high is the price to redeem one’s life; he would never have enough
to remain alive always and not see destruction.

R. Blessed are the poor in spirit; the Kingdom of heaven is theirs!

For he can see that wise men die,
and likewise the senseless and the stupid pass away,
 leaving to others their wealth.

R. Blessed are the poor in spirit; the Kingdom of heaven is theirs!

Gospel Mark 9:38-40

John said to Jesus,
“Teacher, we saw someone driving out demons in your name,
and we tried to prevent him because he does not follow us.”
Jesus replied, “Do not prevent him.
There is no one who performs a mighty deed in my name
who can at the same time speak ill of me.
For whoever is not against us is for us.”

Formed: Thou, Not I

The readings today are all about confidence. Today, we often think about confidence as being self-assured. Both St. James and the Psalmist, however, remind us that true confidence comes from living according to God’s law and trusting in providence.

Today’s Action Item: Have a God-confidence instead of self-confidence.

My prayer…

Dear God, my Abba Father, Lord Jesus my Savior, Holy Spirit within me.
I have proven myself to be unworthy, humbled by my lack of self control. Shamed and disgraced by words that spew out of my lips in anger. But yet I find confidence in Your providence.
I know in You I am made new for each new day. And You use all things for Your glory and honor. Which is what I desire. To bring glory to Your name, and honor to Your truths.
Thank You for walking with me, mine and theirs. Hearing our prayers. Protecting and blessing us. Forgiving us.
Not my will, but Yours Lord God.
Jesus, Mary, I love You, save souls.
In Jesus name I pray.
Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Ghost; as it was in the beginning is now and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

Apostles (Nicene) Creed

I believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible.
I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten Son of God, born of the Father before all ages. God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father; through him all things were made. For us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven,
and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man.
For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate, he suffered death and was buried, and rose again on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end.
I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets.
I believe in one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church. I confess one Baptism for the forgiveness of sins and I look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come.
Amen.

Lords Prayer

Gospel Matthew 16:13-19

When Jesus went into the region of Caesarea Philippi
he asked his disciples,
“Who do people say that the Son of Man is?”
They replied, “Some say John the Baptist, others Elijah,
still others Jeremiah or one of the prophets.”
He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?”
Simon Peter said in reply,
“You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.”
Jesus said to him in reply, “Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah.
For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my heavenly Father.
And so I say to you, you are Peter,
and upon this rock I will build my Church,
and the gates of the netherworld shall not prevail against it.
I will give you the keys to the Kingdom of heaven.
Whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven;
and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.”

Formed: The Gift of Authority

Today is the Feast of the Chair of St. Peter. In ancient times, teachers would address their students while seated. Thus, the Chair of St. Peter represents the teaching authority of the Church. Yet, this feast also reminds us that all authority ultimately comes from Christ.

My prayer…

Dear God, my Abba Father, Lord Jesus my Savior, Holy Spirit within me.
No doubt our Church needs prayer. To many of our priests, bishops have become of the world. Even our Pope seems lost in this world of accommodation and politicization. Yet I pray for them and for the few priests and bishops that are standing firm in the faith and Jesus’s truth.

I pray for me, mine and theirs.
And for believers every where,
Thank You for walking with us. For hearing our prayers. Give us the courage and faith to stand strong in Jesus.
Not my will, but Yours Lord God.

In Jesus name I pray.

Reading I James 3:13-18

Beloved:
Who among you is wise and understanding?
Let him show his works by a good life
in the humility that comes from wisdom.
But if you have bitter jealousy and selfish ambition in your hearts,
do not boast and be false to the truth.
Wisdom of this kind does not come down from above
but is earthly, unspiritual, demonic.
For where jealousy and selfish ambition exist,
there is disorder and every foul practice.
But the wisdom from above is first of all pure,
then peaceable, gentle, compliant,
full of mercy and good fruits,
without inconstancy or insincerity.
And the fruit of righteousness is sown in peace
for those who cultivate peace.

Gospel Mark 9:14-29

As Jesus came down from the mountain with Peter, James, John
and approached the other disciples,
they saw a large crowd around them and scribes arguing with them.
Immediately on seeing him,
the whole crowd was utterly amazed.
They ran up to him and greeted him.
He asked them, “What are you arguing about with them?”
Someone from the crowd answered him,
“Teacher, I have brought to you my son possessed by a mute spirit.
Wherever it seizes him, it throws him down;
he foams at the mouth, grinds his teeth, and becomes rigid.
I asked your disciples to drive it out, but they were unable to do so.”
He said to them in reply,
“O faithless generation, how long will I be with you?
How long will I endure you? Bring him to me.”
They brought the boy to him.
And when he saw him,
the spirit immediately threw the boy into convulsions.
As he fell to the ground, he began to roll around
and foam at the mouth.
Then he questioned his father,
“How long has this been happening to him?”
He replied, “Since childhood.
It has often thrown him into fire and into water to kill him.
But if you can do anything, have compassion on us and help us.”
Jesus said to him,
“‘If you can!’ Everything is possible to one who has faith.”
Then the boy’s father cried out, “I do believe, help my unbelief!”
Jesus, on seeing a crowd rapidly gathering,
rebuked the unclean spirit and said to it,
“Mute and deaf spirit, I command you:
come out of him and never enter him again!”
Shouting and throwing the boy into convulsions, it came out.
He became like a corpse, which caused many to say, “He is dead!”
But Jesus took him by the hand, raised him, and he stood up.
When he entered the house, his disciples asked him in private,
“Why could we not drive the spirit out?”
He said to them, “This kind can only come out through prayer.”

Formed: The Noble Heart

Today, St. James reminds us that humility is a fruit of wisdom. Indeed, the wise man recognizes that God is in charge of all things. He thus lives his life in humble subordination to his Maker. This service and self-sacrifice gives rise to a noble heart!

Daily Catholic Wisdom…

The effect of true love is the reciprocal communication of all good things between the persons who love each other; from which it follows that charity cannot exist without sacrifice.
St. Ignatius of Loyola
from his book The Spiritual Exercises

My prayer…

Dear God, my Abba Father, Lord Jesus my Savior, Holy Spirit within me.
What’s wrong with me Lord. Am I that selfish, that mean and cruel, engulfed by uncontrollable emotions. In my mind I feel reasonable, but am I. I don’t think it age, the result of trying to more than I can or should. I’m just seeking what I have with You… peace and comfort. So why do I react like I do when interrupted. Are others being inconsiderate or I’m being inpatient. I know my words are mean, cruel and hurtful. And that is not my intent. I just crying out… for consideration and understanding. The days seem to overlap and there is little time for rest. I’m tired. Mentally and physically. But yet I push my mind and body to exercise more. I try to nourish my body and mind, with real food and Your Words. But then I breakdown, strike out. And all progress is lost. I feel like such a failure. Hope beyond reach. So I dive into prayer. Knowing that in Your presence I will find what I need to pull me out of this darkness. Help me God. Hear my cry, listen to my prayers for me and mine.

Not my will, but Yours Lord God.

Jesus, Mary, I love You, save souls.
In Jesus name I pray.
Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Ghost; as it was in the beginning is now and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

Reading I 1 Samuel 26:2, 7-9, 12-13, 22-23

In those days, Saul went down to the desert of Ziph
with three thousand picked men of Israel,
to search for David in the desert of Ziph.
So David and Abishai went among Saul’s soldiers by night
and found Saul lying asleep within the barricade,
with his spear thrust into the ground at his head
and Abner and his men sleeping around him.

Abishai whispered to David:
“God has delivered your enemy into your grasp this day.
Let me nail him to the ground with one thrust of the spear;
I will not need a second thrust!”
But David said to Abishai, “Do not harm him,
for who can lay hands on the LORD’s anointed and remain unpunished?”
So David took the spear and the water jug from their place at Saul’s head,
and they got away without anyone’s seeing or knowing or awakening.
All remained asleep,
because the LORD had put them into a deep slumber.

Going across to an opposite slope,
David stood on a remote hilltop
at a great distance from Abner, son of Ner, and the troops.
He said: “Here is the king’s spear.
Let an attendant come over to get it.
The LORD will reward each man for his justice and faithfulness.
Today, though the LORD delivered you into my grasp,
I would not harm the LORD’s anointed.”

Gospel Luke 6:27-38

Jesus said to his disciples:
“To you who hear I say,
love your enemies, do good to those who hate you,
bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you.
To the person who strikes you on one cheek,
offer the other one as well,
and from the person who takes your cloak,
do not withhold even your tunic.
Give to everyone who asks of you,
and from the one who takes what is yours do not demand it back.
Do to others as you would have them do to you.
For if you love those who love you,
what credit is that to you?
Even sinners love those who love them.
And if you do good to those who do good to you,
what credit is that to you?
Even sinners do the same.
If you lend money to those from whom you expect repayment,
what credit is that to you?
Even sinners lend to sinners,
and get back the same amount.
But rather, love your enemies and do good to them,
and lend expecting nothing back;
then your reward will be great
and you will be children of the Most High,
for he himself is kind to the ungrateful and the wicked.
Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful.

“Stop judging and you will not be judged.
Stop condemning and you will not be condemned.
Forgive and you will be forgiven.
Give, and gifts will be given to you;
a good measure, packed together, shaken down, and overflowing,
will be poured into your lap.
For the measure with which you measure
will in return be measured out to you.”

Formed: Imitating the Father

In the First Reading, David has the chance to kill his sinful persecutor, King Saul. Yet the young David recognizes that he must not strike the Lord’s anointed. He shows mercy on Saul, thereby embodying what Christ says in the Gospel: "Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful." Let us, too, show this mercy to our enemies!

My prayer…

Dear God, my Abba Father, Lord Jesus my Savior, Holy Spirit within me.
Constant mercies, great is Your grace. Let Your grace rain down on me, mine and theirs. Praying without ceasing, I still feel I don’t praying enough… specifically, fervently and throughly.
Yes for me, mine and theirs, but also all those You put in my path. Especially those who hate and try to silence or hurt.
Thank You for walking with us. Reminding us of all Your mercy and grace, and inspiring us the give what we receive from You. Hear us, help us Lord God.
Not our will, but Yours Lord God.

Our Father, Who art in Heaven, hallowed be Thy name; Thy Kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in Heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
Amen.

Hail Mary

Hail Mary full of Grace, the Lord is with thee. Blessed are thou among women and blessed is the fruit of thy womb Jesus.
Holy Mary Mother of God, pray for us sinners now and at the hour of our death.
Amen.

Glory be to the Father

Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit. As it was in the beginning is now, and ever shall be, world without end.
Amen.

O my Jesus

O my Jesus, have mercy on us. Forgive us our sins. Save us from the fires of hell. Take all souls into heaven, especially, those most in need of thy mercy.
Amen.

Salve Regina (Hail Holy Queen)

Hail, holy Queen, Mother of mercy, hail, our life, our sweetness and our hope. To thee do we cry, poor banished children of Eve: to thee do we send up our sighs, mourning and weeping in this vale of tears. Turn then, most gracious Advocate, thine eyes of mercy toward us, and after this our exile, show unto us the blessed fruit of thy womb, Jesus, O merciful, O loving, O sweet Virgin Mary!
Amen.

Anima Christi

Within your wounds, hide me. Never let me be parted from you. From the evil enemy, protect me. At the hour of my death, call me. And tell me to come to you. That with your saints I may praise you. Through all eternity.
Amen.

Today’s verse…

Consider how small a fire

defiling the whole body

itself set on fire by Gehenna.

Reading I James 3:1-10

Not many of you should become teachers, my brothers and sisters,
for you realize that we will be judged more strictly,
for we all fall short in many respects.
If anyone does not fall short in speech, he is a perfect man,
able to bridle the whole body also.
If we put bits into the mouths of horses to make them obey us,
we also guide their whole bodies.
It is the same with ships:
even though they are so large and driven by fierce winds,
they are steered by a very small rudder
wherever the pilot’s inclination wishes.
In the same way the tongue is a small member
and yet has great pretensions.

Consider how small a fire can set a huge forest ablaze.
The tongue is also a fire.
It exists among our members as a world of malice,
defiling the whole body
and setting the entire course of our lives on fire,
itself set on fire by Gehenna.
For every kind of beast and bird, of reptile and sea creature,
can be tamed and has been tamed by the human species,
but no man can tame the tongue.
It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison.
With it we bless the Lord and Father,
and with it we curse men
who are made in the likeness of God.
From the same mouth come blessing and cursing.
My brothers and sisters, this need not be so.

Gospel Mark 9:2-13

Jesus took Peter, James, and John
and led them up a high mountain apart by themselves.
And he was transfigured before them,
and his clothes became dazzling white,
such as no fuller on earth could bleach them.
Then Elijah appeared to them along with Moses,
and they were conversing with Jesus.
Then Peter said to Jesus in reply,
“Rabbi, it is good that we are here!
Let us make three tents:
one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.”
He hardly knew what to say, they were so terrified.
Then a cloud came, casting a shadow over them;
then from the cloud came a voice,
“This is my beloved Son. Listen to him.”
Suddenly, looking around, the disciples no longer saw anyone
but Jesus alone with them.

As they were coming down from the mountain,
he charged them not to relate what they had seen to anyone,
except when the Son of Man had risen from the dead.
So they kept the matter to themselves,
questioning what rising from the dead meant.
Then they asked him,
“Why do the scribes say that Elijah must come first?”
He told them, “Elijah will indeed come first and restore all things,
yet how is it written regarding the Son of Man
that he must suffer greatly and be treated with contempt?
But I tell you that Elijah has come
and they did to him whatever they pleased,
as it is written of him.”

Formed: A Spring, Not Salt Water

As we know from our daily lives, the tongue is a powerful force. Our speech can build people up, but it can also tear people down with just a few words. Thus, we must be disciplined in how we speak to others. The Lord works through the tamed tongue!
https://watch.formed.org/videos/daily-reflections-february-19-2022

Today’s Action Item: Use your speech to build people up, not tear people down.

Daily Catholic Wisdom…

To make a good choice on any matter whatever, we must first meditate with a pure and upright intention on the end of our creation, which is the glory of God and our salvation. Therefore, our choice ought never to fall on anything that does not lead us to this end.
St. Ignatius of Loyola
from his book The Spiritual Exercises

My prayer…

Dear God, my Abba Father, Lord Jesus my Savior, Holy Spirit within me.
Taming the tongue is about practicing Your presence. For in Your presence we are an expression of Your love. Separated from the malice in the world that causes us to strike out, rather than reach out. In Your presence we are listeners. Listening for You and to those in need of someone to listen. So in practicing Your presence, we practice listening.
So always be practicing!
Thank You for walking with me, mine and theirs. Protecting, blessing and teaching us in every moment.
Not our will, but Yours Lord God.
Jesus, Mary, I love You, save souls.
In Jesus name I pray.
Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Ghost; as it was in the beginning is now and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

Reading I James 2:14-24, 26

What good is it, my brothers and sisters,
if someone says he has faith but does not have works?
Can that faith save him?
If a brother or sister has nothing to wear
and has no food for the day,
and one of you says to them,
“Go in peace, keep warm, and eat well,”
but you do not give them the necessities of the body,
what good is it?
So also faith of itself,
if it does not have works, is dead.

Indeed someone might say,
“You have faith and I have works.”
Demonstrate your faith to me without works,
and I will demonstrate my faith to you from my works.
You believe that God is one.
You do well.
Even the demons believe that and tremble.
Do you want proof, you ignoramus,
that faith without works is useless?
Was not Abraham our father justified by works
when he offered his son Isaac upon the altar?
You see that faith was active along with his works,
and faith was completed by the works.
Thus the Scripture was fulfilled that says,
Abraham believed God,
and it was credited to him as righteousness,
and he was called the friend of God.
See how a person is justified by works and not by faith alone.
For just as a body without a spirit is dead,
so also faith without works is dead.

Gospel Mark 8:34–9:1

Jesus summoned the crowd with his disciples and said to them,
“Whoever wishes to come after me must deny himself,
take up his cross, and follow me.
For whoever wishes to save his life will lose it,
but whoever loses his life for my sake
and that of the Gospel will save it.
What profit is there for one to gain the whole world
and forfeit his life?
What could one give in exchange for his life?
Whoever is ashamed of me and of my words
in this faithless and sinful generation,
the Son of Man will be ashamed of
when he comes in his Father’s glory with the holy angels.”

He also said to them,
“Amen, I say to you,
there are some standing here who will not taste death
until they see that the Kingdom of God has come in power.”

Formed: Incarnate Faith

St. James famously tells us that faith apart from works is dead. In other words, faith must become incarnate in daily life; dogma must become deeds. We are called to pray, feed the hungry, and help those in need. This is the path to eternal communion with the Lord of hosts!
https://watch.formed.org/videos/daily-reflections-february-18-2022

Today’s Action Item: Do deeds of love and be faithful to the love you have been given.

Daily Catholic Wisdom…

If we allow the good to reveal itself within us, we will not only know of its divine origin; we will know that the divine is present to us—at once outside of us and embedded in the absolute duty of the good within us. This presence of the divine within us makes us transcendental.
Fr. Robert Spitzer, S.J.
from his book The Soul’s Upward Yearning

My prayer…

Dear God, my Abba Father, Lord Jesus my Savior, Holy Spirit within me.
Faith and works, denying one’s self and ,taking up my cross, and follow Jesus has proven to be as difficult as Jesus warned. But by focusing on His truths I can see the truth even if I don’t always walk in it. Faith worked out and active has to produce works. And while there are many looking to take advantage of one’s generosity there are many types of work that needs to be done. And learning to discipline and deny myself while facing my fallen nature and sins is so hard to do. I know that by following Jesus, I keep growing closer to him and through that the closer I walk and forgive others, the more I am able to separate myself today, from the crosses of the past that I carry.
And so I pray, for me, mine and theirs. Asking that You continue to protect, bless and guide us each day.
Not our will, but Yours Lord God.
Jesus, Mary, I love You, save souls.
In Jesus name I pray.
Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Ghost; as it was in the beginning is now and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

Our Father, Who art in Heaven, hallowed be Thy name; Thy Kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in Heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

Soul of Christ, make me holy. Body of Christ, save me. Blood of Christ, fill me with love. Water from Christ’s side, wash me. Passion of Christ, strengthen me. Good Jesus, hear me. Within your wounds, hide me. Never let me be parted from you. From the evil enemy, protect me. At the hour of my death, call me. And tell me to come to you. That with your saints I may praise you. Through all eternity.
Amen.

Today’s verse…

However, if you fulfill the royal law according to the Scripture,

You shall love your neighbor as yourself,
you are doing well.

But if you show partiality, you commit sin,

and are convicted by the law as transgressors.
Mark 2:8-9

Reading I James 2:1-9

My brothers and sisters, show no partiality
as you adhere to the faith in our glorious Lord Jesus Christ.
For if a man with gold rings and fine clothes
comes into your assembly,
and a poor person with shabby clothes also comes in,
and you pay attention to the one wearing the fine clothes
and say, “Sit here, please,”
while you say to the poor one, “Stand there,” or “Sit at my feet,”
have you not made distinctions among yourselves
and become judges with evil designs?

Listen, my beloved brothers and sisters.
Did not God choose those who are poor in the world
to be rich in faith and heirs of the Kingdom
that he promised to those who love him?
But you dishonored the poor.
Are not the rich oppressing you?
And do they themselves not haul you off to court?
Is it not they who blaspheme the noble name that was invoked over you?
However, if you fulfill the royal law according to the Scripture,
You shall love your neighbor as yourself, you are doing well.
But if you show partiality, you commit sin,
and are convicted by the law as transgressors.

Gospel Mark 8:27-33

Jesus and his disciples set out
for the villages of Caesarea Philippi.
Along the way he asked his disciples,
“Who do people say that I am?”
They said in reply,
“John the Baptist, others Elijah,
still others one of the prophets.”
And he asked them,
“But who do you say that I am?”
Peter said to him in reply,
“You are the Christ.”
Then he warned them not to tell anyone about him.

He began to teach them
that the Son of Man must suffer greatly
and be rejected by the elders, the chief priests, and the scribes,
and be killed, and rise after three days.
He spoke this openly.
Then Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him.
At this he turned around and, looking at his disciples,
rebuked Peter and said, “Get behind me, Satan.
You are thinking not as God does, but as human beings do.”

Formed: Human Dignity

Sometimes we can be tempted to show partiality, especially to those who can give us something in return. As James tells us, however, we are to welcome the rich and the poor alike. Regardless of financial or societal status, all people are precious creations of God. Our actions toward others should reflect that truth.

Today’s Action Item: Treat all people with their God-given dignity.

Daily Catholic Wisdom…

For it is not earthly riches which make us happy; for they must either be lost by us in our lifetime, or be possessed when we are dead, by whom we know not, or perhaps by whom we would not. But, it is God who makes us happy, who is the true riches.
St. Augustine

My prayer…

Dear God, my Abba Father, Lord Jesus my Savior, Holy Spirit within me.
Like the sparrow You give us all that we need, and in You we find happiness. There in is the mystery of life under the sun. A view of the world beyond human understanding. Yet one we must learn to reflect in our walk. With everyone You put in our path. In this way, we reflect Your presence in us.
Thank You for revealing and reminding us when necessary if this truth to guide and direct our walk. Continue to walk with us, me, mine and theirs. Teaching us and guiding us in Your ways and truths.
Not our will, but Yours Lord God.
Jesus, Mary, I love You, save souls.
In Jesus name I pray.
Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Ghost; as it was in the beginning is now and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.
